Bill would reauthorize funding for rural counties

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County would continue to receive federal funding for its public schools, law enforcement programs and other essential services, under a bipartisan congressional agreement unveiled last week.

Austin students take part in Big Creek Run

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - In the early hours of Sept. 28, Austin junior and senior high school students participated in the Big Creek Run. This annual fundraiser provides funding to support students participating in Austin athletics and extracurricular activities.

Car strikes deputy's vehicle Man arrested for battery with

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - After a vehicle pursuit at around 7:55 p.m. on Sept. 29 that started on North Second Street, deputies arrested 29-year-old Jacob David Kiehne, of Battle Mountain, for several offenses, said Lander County Sheriff Ron Unger.

Dunphy Complex fires consume nearly 205,000 acres

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Dunphy Complex fires north of Carlin were made up of three distinct fires, including the Izzenhood, Chukar Canyon and Indian Creek fires. They erupted on Sept. 30 due to lightning and consumed nearly 205,000 acres.

Jacob's Well Pie-Eating Contest

Monday, Oct. 3, proved to be a fun-filled day at Jacob's Well, as eight contestants entered the Pie-Eating Contest. No entry fee was required, just an appetite! Participants James Carson, Arturo Serrano, Joe Youngblood, Brian Doney, Dana West, Braden McIntosh, Ian McRae and Bret Hetland battled for first place. Ian McRae took first place, eating 3¾ of chocolate pudding pies and winning a $25 gift certificate to Walmart. Hats off to volunteers Ruby Bryant, Donna Combs and Trish Hanson, who worked hard to keep the pies coming!

School board sets goals, objectives and performance objectives for district and superintendent Jim Squibb says he is enjoying his new job

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County School District's new Superintendent Jim Squibb has been busy settling into his job and says he is enjoying it. He started his new job as superintendent on July 1.

Breakfast for kids program going strong Lorrie Sparks gave brief presentation to the school board

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The local breakfast for kids program is still running strong and feeding numerous children throughout the school district, said Program Director Lorrie Sparks, who gave a brief presentation on the program to the Lander County School Board at their Sept. 28 board meeting.

Fun Run/Walk to be held to raise domestic violence awareness Event scheduled for Oct. 22

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Committee Against Domestic Violence's Sixth Annual Fun Run/Walk will be held Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. beginning and ending at Elquist Park. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m.The 3.5-mile route will wind through town, said Michele Scovil, the group's corresponding secretary.

Local students star in Missoula Children's Theatre production of 'King Arthur's Quest'

By Jan EhlertBATTLE MOUNTAIN - On Saturday, Oct. 8 - after an entire week of learning lines, songs, and choreography - students from the Battle Mountain community ages K-12 put on a great performance of the musical "King Arthur's Quest" conceived and written by Michael McGill and Rebecca McGill of Missoula Children's Theatre. Annually the Battle Mountain Arts Presenters pays to have this group come and introduce the performing arts experience to the youth. This gives students exposure to the performing arts and an opportunity to observe and participate in a full scale musical production. It is a great educational experience for youth. They learn about working hard, having fun, discipline, memorizing routines and lines, and scheduling.

Sober Seniors Bingo night Oct. 20 at the Civic Center Group raising money for graduation party

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The local Sober Seniors organization will hold a fundraising Bingo night at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Civic Center. The group will be raising money for the end of year graduation party on June 8, said Michele Scovil, president of Sober Seniors.

Jacob Kiehne released from jail under house arrest Case continued to undetermined date

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Jacob David Kiehne, 29, of Battle Mountain, was present in the Argenta Justice Court on Oct. 18 with his public defender, Ted Herrera, and the case was continued to an undetermined date.

Chukar tournament to include banquet, raffles Event to be held Nov. 5 with registration on Nov. 4

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority Tenth Annual Chukar Tournament and Feed will be held Nov. 5 with check-in, registration and sign-ups to be held on Nov. 4 at the Civic Center, according to the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority board.
