Sagebrush Sounds Music Festival this Saturday

The music scene in Northern Nevada is full of talented artists and the Sagebrush Sounds Music Festival is bringing 16 of them to Winnemucca on Sept. 23 at the Havens Ranch located west of town at 8005 McNinch Rd. Every dollar earned will go to benefit the Frontier Community Action Agency (FCAA) to help connect members of the community with resources in times of socioeconomic difficulty and raise awareness about the resources available in the community.

County braces for massive lithium mine

Winnemucca, a town of more than 8,600 residents off Interstate-80 in Northern Nevada, is proud of its reputation as a great place to raise a family and cheer for the Lowry High Buckaroos athletic teams. It's also billed as the "Friendliest Town in Nevada" by Travel Nevada. That, however, has not led to people flocking to live there, as growth has remained steady in number.

OHV accidents on the rise in rural Nevada

The state of Nevada is facing a difficult reality—kids, teens and adults are suffering traumatic brain injuries from off-highway vehicle (OHV) accidents at alarming rates and not only does Nevada not have a sufficient number of medical centers in proximity to rural areas where most of these accidents are happening, but Nevada also lacks the proper helmet laws to keep people safe.

McDermitt volleyball team knocked off by Eureka, Round Mountain

The McDermitt High School volleyball team made its home debut this past Friday against Eureka in a 1A East battle. All three sets were close, with the Vandals pulling away for a 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 victory. Breena Crutcher provided the first two points for the Lady Bulldogs in the opening set with a kill and block, when Eureka went on a 10-3 run to lead 12-5.

Division of Forestry says majority of wildfires in Humboldt County have been human-caused

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) has reported that Humboldt County has seen 250 wildfires, burning 480,766.78 acres, since 2018. The majority of the fires, 173, have been human caused, destroying six different ranches, grazing land, and animal habitats. The remainders have been caused by weather or the cause has not been determined.

City approves contribution to long-range shooting bays at shooting park

Long before hunting season starts, outdoorsmen from all over northern Nevada utilize the Humboldt County Shooting Park to sight-in their weapons and practice with targets. Others use the pistol bays for practice and sport, and now, with a recent decision by local officials, long-range bays will be added to the park's offerings.

Bait and cast a line during the free Kids Fishing Day at the James Kinney pond

Summer is wrapping up but that’s no reason to put away those fishing poles. The annual Kids Fishing Day is taking place on Sept. 16 for young anglers at the James Kinney Community Pond on Reinhart Lane. The free event is for kids 11 and under and there are no licenses required.

West Nile virus was recently identified in Humboldt County in a Winnemucca trap site by the county’s contract mosquito/black fly management team.

Bridging gaps in math —

Local teachers Joleen Nielsen (front left), sixth grade teacher at French Ford Middle School (FFMS), and Adrianne Hanninen (front right), third grade teacher at Grass Valley Elementary School, were celebrated at the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) Board of Trustees meeting on Aug. 22 for their exemplary work on the district’s Math Project. Both teachers provided coaching and help to other teachers participating in the project, bridging gaps in students’ math skills as a result of the pandemic.

Buckaroo Hall of Fame to honor three

Two Oregon buckaroos, Dallas "Dally" Givan and Terry Cahill along with Ervin Thompson from northern Nevada will be inducted into the Buckaroo Hall of Fame over Labor Day Weekend, in conjunction with the annual Buckaroo Heritage Art Roundup. On Friday, Sept. 1, there will be a social gathering for the honorees, family and friends at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 2, there's the induction ceremony at noon, including speakers, stories and reception. All events held at the Buckaroo Hall of Fame, located at the East Hall Convention Center.

After judge denies GOP request to block presidential primary, party appeals to Nevada Supreme Court

The Nevada Republican Party filed an appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court seeking to block the state from holding a presidential primary election next year after a Carson City judge denied the party’s case in District Court, court filings obtained by The Nevada Independent show.
