This year the 2023 Tri-County Junior Livestock Show and Sale (TCJLS) was held over 3 days. The Goat Showmanship and Breeding Class started the show on Friday, September 1st. The Swine, Lamb and Beef Showmanship along with all the market classes were held Saturday, September 2nd and concluded with the Market Animal Sale on Sunday, September 3rd.
Denio students are holding a book drive to benefit newborn baby Noah Montero, whose father, Trenten Montero, recently passed away. Students are asking that the books be donated by Oct. 5, with collection boxes at both the Denio Library and Humboldt County Library, so they can be brought to the Montero family shortly after.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it will begin issuing more than $1.75 billion in emergency relief payments to eligible farmers and livestock producers. These much-needed payments are helping farming and ranching operations recover following natural disasters in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Mapping a 10,000 square mile county and then combining all of the data and arranging it in a user-friendly and applicable way to the public is no easy feat, but Humboldt County Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician Jessica Smith has been working on doing just that for the past two years in the Humboldt County Assessor’s Office.
Historically, the Humboldt County School District has provided equitable salary raises to administrators, classified staff and certified staff across the district. However, Senate Bill 231, passed during the last legislative session, purposely excludes administration from the raises given to educators from the state for the next two years, thus pushing the decision to provide raises to all school district staff to the Humboldt County School District (HCSD) Board of Trustees. Funds would have been shifted from the General Fund to cover those raises.
PuppYoga — it’s exactly what it sounds like. Denio Librarian, Certified Yoga Instructor, and K-9 Behaviorist and Trainer Kristin Baker is hosting PuppYoga during two pop-up events that will help socialize service puppies in training and benefit the Denio Library.
The annual drive-through flu shot clinic will return this October, providing residents with a free and easy way to protect themselves against the coming flu season.
Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street. Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10.
As it stands in the City of Winnemucca, discharging a firearm into an unoccupied or unpopulated space, like a car or open lot, is a misdemeanor but firing a weapon into an occupied or populated space, like a home or business, is a felony.
With multiple capital projects with hefty price tags on the horizon for Humboldt County the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners discussed the projects under consideration as well as available funding sources at its most recent meeting on Sept. 18 with Commissioner Tom Hoss absent.

Great Basin Gas (GBG), a subsidiary of Southwest Gas, supplies natural gas to homes all across Nevada and Humboldt County. GBG has recently started the 2023 Mainline Replacement Project running to the west of US Highway 95 and ending west of Winnemucca, south of Jungo Road. It will replace a gas line that supplies gas to Winnemucca, Lovelock, Fernley, Fallon, Yerington, Carson, Reno, Minden, Genoa, Gardnerville, Tahoe and other surrounding areas.
