Few DMV customers claimed refunds for unconstitutional $1 fee

Despite the Nevada DMV making millions of dollars available for refunding $1-per-transaction technology fees declared unconstitutional in 2021 by the Nevada Supreme Court, motorists have claimed less than 10 percent of the available funds, according to a final report on the refund project presented Monday to state lawmakers.

Nevada’s local governments reported spending nearly $4.7 million to lobby legislators during this year’s 120-day legislative session, breaking the record for annual lobbying spending by more than $700,000.

City approves motion to update engineering work at airport

Magnetic variation (MAGVAR) determines true north and helps maintain accurate displays for pilots during flight and other systems like auto flight. The variation is displayed on an airport runway and can change over time due to magnetic declination. According to City officials, the MAGVAR at the Winnemucca Municipal Airport needs to be updated, along with lights and wind cones.

Commissioners expect large turnout for annular eclipse, preparation for influx of travelers begins

The Humboldt County Board of Commissioners is expecting a major influx of travelers and traffic as people visit Winnemucca to view the Annual Solar Eclipse that will take place on Oct. 14. Winnemucca and is said to have the best viewing position. During the meeting Aug. 21, commissioners decided to close the road to the top of Winnemucca Mountain during the weekend of the event in preparation for eclipse viewers. Commissioner Jesse Hill was absent from the meeting.

BLM begins public scoping for Robertson Mine Project

BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District, Mount Lewis Field Office announced its intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Robertson Mine Project and will be conducting two public scoping meetings. The meetings will be held online on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at 2 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

McDermitt attracts more lithium mining exploration

Longtime businessman, fire chief named Labor Day Grand Marshal

The decades-long “voice” of the Labor Day Parade has a new job this year: Torrey Sheen will serve as the 2023 Grand Marshal. Torrey has been a mainstay in the Humboldt County community for many years—from his many years in radio broadcasting, to his time on local boards and organizations, to his current appointment as Chief of the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department. Being named the 2023 Labor Day Grand Marshal is just one more line on a growing list of decades-long accomplishments.
