Lithium Americas to get massive federal loan to develop Thacker Pass mine

The U.S. government offered Canada-based Lithium Americas a financial lifeline Thursday to develop a Nevada lithium deposit that contains the largest-proven lithium reserves in North America. Citing a need to secure a domestic supply of lithium for electric car batteries, the Biden administration agreed to provide a $2.26 billion conditional loan for the construction of a lithium carbonate processing plant at Thacker Pass in Humboldt County, Nevada. It’s the largest federal investment in a lithium mine to date.

Lady Longhorns outscore Nighthawks 54-3 in three-game, Northern 2A sweep

The Battle Mountain High School softball team enjoyed its opening weekend at home, sweeping Silver Stage by a combined score of 54-3 to improve to 3-0 in the Northern 2A.

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team saw action on its newly constructed field, as the Longhorns opened Northern 2A play with a three-game sweep of Silver Stage. The field had new fencing put around it and workers dug out the infield and features a new look. In the past only the bases were cut out but now the field features a brand-new infield.

Pershing County softball team sweeps three games from North Tahoe

The Pershing County High School softball team dunked North Tahoe in a triple header this past week. On Wednesday, the Lakers got a taste of what the Mustangs had in store for them. Pershing County jumped out with 11 runs. The game lasted three innings with a final score of 16-0.

Battle Mountain track and field team begins season at Fernley meet

The Battle Mountain High School track and field team saw its first action of the spring season, traveling to Fernley last Saturday. The meet featured nine teams from the 1A, 2A and 3A, with the Battle Mountain boys placing fourth with 52 points.

PCHS baseball drops three games against North Tahoe

The Pershing County High School baseball team hosted North Tahoe for a triple header this past week. The Mustangs went 0-3, with scores of 8-4, 13-2 and 21-3. It was a letdown for the Mustangs after a strong preseason tournament but they remain excited about the year ahead.

Garner, Guzman collect 3A all-league basketball honors

Lowry High School seniors Kasyn Garner and Anthony Guzman were named to the Northern 3A East honorable mention team. The all-league selections are chosen by the league coaches.

Local cowboys, cowgirls shine at Las Vegas High School Rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its final stop in southern Nevada, with a trip to Las Vegas on Feb. 24-25. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo was tops in the breakaway roping average by two seconds at 5.88. She won the first performance with a time of 2.89 and was second in the final performance at 2.99.

LHS swimmers sweep dual from Wooster

While most spring sports teams in northern Nevada were finding cover due to a winter storm, the Lowry High School swim team was inside at Alf Sorenson Pool in Reno top open its season on Friday, March 1. Lowry picked up duals wins over Wooster, as the boys cruised to a 75-23 win and the girls team recorded a 96-90 victory.
