Battle Mountain track and field team begins season at Fernley meet


The Battle Mountain High School track and field team saw its first action of the spring season, traveling to Fernley last Saturday.

The meet featured nine teams from the 1A, 2A and 3A, with the Battle Mountain boys placing fourth with 52 points.

The Lady Longhorns finished fifth with 56 points. Fernley swept both team titles.

BMHS senior Blake Stuart set a personal best in the high jump to win the event with a leap of 6 feet, 1 inch. He posted a runner-up finish in the long jump at (18-7).

Fellow senior, Andy Wall turned in a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 18.94 seconds, with sophomore teammate Joey Smith placing sixth at 20.77. 

Senior Julian Sosa placed fourth in the triple jump, setting a personal best with a leap of 28 feet, 6.5 inches. Eli Colver was fourth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:46,38 and he was 16th in the 1,600 meters (5:452.73).

Sophomore Elias Goodman finished seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 26.81 and he was eighth in the 100 meters (12.54). Alex Wall finished 13th in the 200 meters (26.81).

Senior Ben George finished fifth in the discus with a toss of 99-10 and was ninth in the shot put with a personal best throw of 32-6.50. 

Hunter Gilbert set a personal best in the shot put (32-11) to finish eighth and Andres Molina was 10th in both the shot put (31-2.50) and the discus (89-6).

Aden Jenkins (7-6) and Joey Smith (6-0) were eighth and 10th, respectfully in the pole vault.

On the girls side, freshman Juliet LaRiva placed fifth in the 800 meters at 3:18.15, while teammate Camilla Colver was seventh (4:17.57).  LaRiva also finished fifth in the 1,600 meters (7:34.36) and Colver was eighth (9:36.53).

Senior Jenna Chopp was the runner-up in the shot put with a personal best throw of 28-0 and was sixth in the discus (62-10) another personal best. Divine Jacobson had her best throw of her career in the discus to place fourth at 66-4 and the senior was 11th in the shot put (22-7.50).

Lindsey Bleak placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 28-0 and freshman Hailey Cook was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 12-7.

The 4x100 B team of Yaritza Vazquez, Kendall Mudd, Andrea Rogers and Kairi Walden placed second in a time of 56.44, with the A team of Hailee Cook, Bleak, Taylor Clark and Andrea Alcaraz-Lopez finishing third at 58.80.

The 4x400 relay of Anai Gonzalez, Tessa Ostler, Andrea Alcaraz-Lopez and Yaritza Vazquez finished third with a time of 5:34.94.

Battle Mountain is off this weekend and travels to Fallon on Saturday, March 23, for the Fallon Elks Invitational.
