The PCHS baseball went 3-0 at the Pershing County tournament last weekend. The boys beat Sparks (11-1), Lowry JV (16-6) and Battle Mountain (18-3). Officials canceled the last day of the three-day tournament due to extreme weather.
Last Thursday, Pershing County girls basketball lost 58-31 to Needles, Calif., in the state semifinals. They competed at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. Needles advanced to the title game and beat North Tahoe 48-34 in the Virginia Street gym on Friday in the championship.
Last week PCHS girls basketball coach Lee Houston predicted the Mustangs would punch their ticket to state. That's what happened this past week at the Northern 2A Regional Tournament in West Wendover.
The Pershing County boys basketball team had their ups and downs this season. However, 2023-2024 was a breakthrough year for them. Last Thursday, they reached their goal of making it to the playoffs, hosted by West Wendover.
It was a banner year for the Pershing County Mustang wrestlers. To cap it all off, four of them placed at the state competition in Arizona last Friday. The Nevada state championship was in Bullhead City, an eight-hour drive from Pershing County.
Last Tuesday was a milestone for the Pershing County High School girls basketball team. Silver Stage visited PCHS on senior night, the last home game of the year. The Mustangs beat the Nighthawks 55-23.
The Pershing County Mustangs basketball team ended their regular season last week with two league wins. On Tuesday, they hosted Silver Stage for senior night, defeating them 60-25. On Friday the Mustangs traveled to Fallon to beat Oasis Academy (53-40). The Mustangs came out strong against the Nighthawks.They were determined to see their seniors off with a win.
This past Saturday, the PCHS gym saw all-day wrestling action. Pershing County hosted the NIAA Class 2A Northern Region zone championship. The Mustangs qualified 11 wrestlers for the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 16 in Bullhead City, Ariz.
The Pershing County boys basketball team lost to Yerington (58-44) and North Tahoe (55-48) this past week. They hosted Yerington on Tuesday and traveled to North Tahoe on Saturday. Pershing County now stands at 8-15, overall, and 7-9 in the 2A Northern league.
Pershing County’s wrestlers have jettisoned to the top three of the Northern 2A league. Their performances at the duals showcased their competitive spirits. On Tuesday they competed in Yerington. Saturday they dualed in Battle Mountain.
Pershing County suffered its second loss of the year last Friday at North Tahoe 53-28. Earlier in the week, they beat Yerington 49-34. With the mixed results, the Mustangs stand at 21-2, overall, and 14-2 in the 2A. They’ve clinched the No. 2 seed going into the regional playoffs. Pershing County hosted Silver Stage on Tuesday, Feb. 6, for senior night. Results were not available at press time.
The Pershing County girls basketball team played three games this past week and won them all. The Mustangs beat CASR on the road (64-38) last Tuesday. They upset Battle Mountain (37-26) at home on Friday night. Saturday afternoon they topped West Wendover (43-27).

Saturday, they fell to visiting West Wendover (57-39). Pershing County is currently sixth in the 2A (7-6) and stands at 8-13, overall, and 7-7 in the 2A Northern League.
The Pershing County wrestlers traveled to Fernley last weekend for the Vaquero Classic. Over 30 teams competed, with Spanish Springs, Fernley, Douglas, Lowry and Carson rounding out the top five.
Thomas Edison said, "Genius is ten percent inspiration and 90% perspiration." However, ten percent can make a huge difference in tight basketball competitions. That's why Lee Houston took the Pershing County girls basketball team to Fernley last Friday night.
