The PCHS boys basketball team played two games this past week. On Friday, the Mustangs beat the Silver Stage Nighthawks on the road 55-42. This past Saturday they lost 78-50 to Yerington at home. On Tuesday, Lovelock traveled to Battle Mountain to play the Longhorns. Results were not available at press time. The win against Silver Stage should boost the Mustangs’ confidence. The Pershing County High School girls basketball team picked up two wins this week, scoring over 100 points between the two games. On Friday, the Mustangs held Silver Stage to 13 points 53-136. Yerington did not fare much better (53-26) the next night in the PCHS gym. On Tuesday, the girls traveled to Battle Mountain. Results were not available at press time. “Over the years Silver Stage has been a hard place to play,” said Lee Houston, the girls varsity coach. “The girls did a great job digging deep to find energy and not look past them to Yerington the next day.”

The Pershing County boys basketball team has a score to settle with Battle Mountain. The Mustangs were within centimeters of beating the Longhorns this past Friday at PCHS. However, at the final buzzer Pershing County fell short by two points at 52-50. “It was our best performance as a team,” said Coach Jesse Canchola, comparing the Battle Mountain game with the rest of the week’s games. “We’ve been struggling with the team concept like most teams fighting adversity. Against the Longhorns, we came together and produced some quality basketball.”
It was a good week to be a Lady Mustang basketball player. Taylor Garland and Raegan Burrows guarded the opposing team’s point guards. Kylee Fuller forced multiple turnovers with her defensive pressure. Bela Rosas scored two 3-pointers when needed most.

The Pershing County boys basketball team has five wins under their belt but has yet to score a league win. They’ll have an opportunity to change that on Friday against Battle Mountain (0-2). The Longhorns will also be fighting for their first league victory so expect intensity.
Pershing County High School varsity girls basketball head coach Lee Houston had a name for Friday night’s game against Yerington. He called the road game “a tale of two halves.’ In the first half, the Mustangs abounded with energy on the floor and from the bench – more than they’ve shown all season. At halftime, they were up 26-7. It looked bleak for the Lions. But not so fast.
