Nevada football coach Jay Norvell announced today veteran coach and former NFL linebacker Jackie Shipp will coach the Wolf Pack’s defensive line heading into the 2019 season. “Jackie has recruited and developed some great NFL defensive linemen,” said Norvell. “He also has coached in some of the biggest games in college football. Jackie Shipp is a great addition to our Wolf Pack staff.”
The Northern 2A Regional Basketball Championships get underway Thursday at Sparks High School. The girls bracket is set but the boys bracket is still incomplete, with North Tahoe and Silver Stage still having to play. The game has been postponed multiple times due to the weather over the past couple weeks. On the girls side, Battle Mountain, the No. 3 seed, will take on sixth-seeded West Wendover at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of that game faces Incline at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The Battle Mountain High School JV girls basketball team finished the year with five wins and ended the season at 13-3 Battle Mountain beat Mineral County 45-7 on Friday afternoon, on the strength of its press. The Lady Longhorns turned steals into buckets and scored 25 points in first quarter while holding the Serpents scoreless. And led 30-0 at halftime. Battle Mountain was led by Zarina Ceja with 14 points. Jade Castellanos and Brynnlee Freeman both added eight points and Yezzel Guizar six.

Since the turn of the century, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team has dominated the rest of its foes in the 2A Division. Since 2000, the Longhorns have won 15 state championships and came into the 2019 tournament with a state-record 18 titles. A bid for a 19th state championship came up short this past weekend in Winnemucca, as Pershing County captured its first sttae title in the sport. The Mustangs beat the Longhorns 209-173.50. Yerington was third at 154.50 and Pahranagat Valley (68) and Tonopah (64.50) rounde dout the top five.
The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team split two road games this past week in Lake Tahoe. Battle Mountain was in Incline on Thursday night and lost 70-46. Kobe Lake posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Terrence Fetterly and Alan Martinez added eight points and two rebounds apiece.
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up a much-needed victory in Tahoe City, Calif., on Friday against North Tahoe. The Longhorns avenged an earlier loss to the Lakers in Battle Mountain when North Tahoe hit a shot at the buzzer to win.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team took to the mats last Saturday at Pershing County High School in Lovelock with one goal in mind — qualifying as many individuals for this weekend’s state tournament as they could. When the action was over in the Pershing County High School gym, the Longhorns qualified 15 wrestlers and in the process finished in second place in the Northern AA League Tournament. “We go into the post season focused on each individual. If each of the kids is ready to accomplish their goals, then the whole team thing will take care of itself,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala.

BMHS crushes Incline When Incline visited Battle Mountain in the middle of December, the Highlanders came away with a 53-51 win. It was a much different story this past Thursday, as Battle Mountain won 48-19.
The Battle Mountain High School boys JV basketball team split its last four games. The Longhorns picked up two wins this past weekend on the road, beating Silver Stage 61-45 and Yerington 52-45. In the win over Silver Stage, Terrance Fetterly led Battle Mountain with 16 points and three rebounds. Santos Farias added 14 points and five rebounds and Kobe Lake posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Longhorns knocked off Silver Springs 39-12 on Friday afternoon and lost 42-31 to Yerington on Saturday. BMHS head coach Keegan Walchli noted that Battle Mountain played tough defensively and rebounded well for four whole quarters against Silver Springs. She noted the Lady Longhorns also had success with their press leaving the Nighthawks frustrated on offense,
The regional playoff chances for the Battle Mountain boys basketball team took a hit this past weekend in Lyon County with a pair of losses in the Northern 2A. The Longhorns were in Silver Springs on Friday night and lost 63-28 to Silver Stage. Battle Mountain moved over to Yerington on Saturday and lost 70-52 to the Lions.
