With the postseason coming up quickly, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team is looking to improve its playoff seeding for the regional tournament in Sparks in February. The Lady Longhorns collected two crucial victories last weekend to accomplish that feat. Battle Mountain knocked off Silver Stage 56-35 on Friday and Yerington 41-32 on Saturday and sit fourth in the Northern 2A at 8-4.
As January came to a close, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling Team began gearing up for a postseason run to the state tournament. The action started on Wednesday night (Jan. 23) in Elko as the Longhorns made the short trip for the Eastern AA League Duals. The boys in green posted a 4-0 team mark. Battle Mountain knocked off Owyhee 60-6, Independence 66-0, Wells 48-15 and Eureka 48-15.
What could have turned into a great weekend for the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team, turned in to a heartbreaking end on both nights this past weekend in Battle Mountain. The Longhorns overcame an eight-point deficit to league-leading West Wendover on Friday night, only to lose 63-58 in overtime. Battle Mountain held a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter against White Pine on Saturday, but the Bobcats scored the final 18 points of the contest to win 39-38 and drop the Longhorns to 3-7 in the Northern 2A.
With the second half of the Northern 2A season beginning this past weekend, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team is looking to position itself for the best possible playoff seeding for the regional tournament in Sparks next month. The Lady Longhorns saw two teams going in different direction last weekend at home. Battle Mountain hosted West Wendover, a team near the bottom of the 2A standings, and won 48-31. White Pine, the top team in the Northern 2A visited Saturday afternoon and left undefeated with a 37-26 win.
The Battle Mountain High School JV girls basketball team came away with two impressive home wins this past weekend. The Lady Longhorns beat West Wendover 43-10 on Friday afternoon. Battle Mountain jumped to an early lead with 16 points in the first quarter and West Wendover struggled to take care of the ball against the Battle Mountain press. The Lady Longhorns allowed just four points at halftime for a 22-4 lead.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team got its last taste of non-league competition for the season as they participated in the Vaquero Classic this past weekend in Fernley. This tournament featured 28 teams from all classifications in Northern Nevada.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team collected a pair of wins last week on the road. Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and came away with a 50-32 win over its rival school.
The annual Kiwanis Invitational Tournament provides an opportunity for the best wrestling teams in the region to come together to battle on the mats. With teams from Idaho and throughout the state of Nevada gathering to do battle, the Longhorns were eager to see where they stacked up in the standings.
After losing its last four games at home, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team got back on the winning track last week. Battle Mountain made its way to Lovelock on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and came back home with a 49-29 win over rival Pershing County. The Longhorns held the Mustangs to single digits in every quarter, in the low-scoring contest. Battle Mountain led 11-6 after one quarter of play and increased the advantage to 26-14 at halftime. A 15-6 run in the third quarter pushed the gap to over 20 points and the Longhorns were never challenged.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team has had to go through some adjustments in the first month of the season. The Lady Longhorns received bad news before the season even started when they found Isabella DeAllah would not play due to a knee injury suffered on the last day of the volleyball season. Battle Mountain made it through the first couple weeks of the season without another injury, until sophomore Brooke Ripley injured her knee against Incline a couple weeks ago and is now out for the season.
Southern Idaho was the destination for the Battle Mountain High School wrestling tea, as they kicked off 2019 by seeking out the best the Spud State had to offer. “We split up into two teams this weekend in order to get all the kids as many matches as possible. It paid off. Our kids wrestled solid throughout the tournaments,” said BMHS coach Domagala.
The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team was back on its home floor this past weekend and came away with a win and loss. Battle Mountain faced Silver Stage on Friday afternoon and posted a 59-51 win. Santos Farias led the way with 18 points and six rebounds. Terrence Fetterly joined him in double figures 14 points eight rebounds.
The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls saw its first action of 2019, hosting a pair of games this past weekend. The Lady Longhorns opened the weekend on Friday afternoon with a 46-12 win over Silver Stage.
Slow starts for the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team have been commonplace this season and this past weekend was no different for the Longhorns. Coming off a week without games, Battle Mountain fell behind early to Silver Stage on Friday night and suffered a 52-51 loss to the Nighthawks. Battle Mountain outscored Silver Stage 24-10 in the final eight minutes but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team dug itself a big hole on Friday, Dec. 21, and were unable to come back from a double-digit, first-quarter deficit to Incline.
