Battle Mountain golfers finish second at West Wendover

Despite chilly conditions last week, the skies were clear as the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team made its way to West Wendover and Toana Vista Golf Course on Thursday to open play in the Northern 2A. The Longhorns finished second with a team total of 506. West Wendover captured first place in the tournament on its home course. Max Villanueva led Battle Mountain with a fourth-place finish, as he shot 103. Avry Tucker made his way into the top-10 with a ninth-place finish shooting an 117.

Shorthorn wrestlers wrap up season

The annual Tah-Neva League Championship Tournament brings together 23 of the top wrestling programs in the Northern and Central parts of Nevada for a one day show down for mat supremacy.   After going toe-to-toe for the whole season in various tournaments the BMJHS wrestlers battled their way to an eighth-place finish in the final tournament. “The kids wrestled their best matches this weekend.  I thought their effort level was super high and I was impressed with how they performed,” said coach Mitch Domagala.

Battle Mountain's Diaz, Martinez named to Northern 2A all-league team

Battle Mountain’s Danny Diaz and DJ Martinez were named to the Northern 2A all-league teams, which is selected by the league’s coaches. Diaz was a second-team choice and Martinez was chosen to the honorable mention squad. The Longhorns finished sixth in the Northern 2A but made a run in the regional tournament and came up just short of reaching the state tournament.

Nevada plays Florida in opening round of NCAA Tournament

The University of Nevada (29-4) men’s basketball team has earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships and will play Florida (19-15) on Thursday at the 14,039 seat Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

Battle Mountain softball team hosts North Tahoe

The Battle Mountain High School softball team opened Northern 2A play with a three-game series against North Tahoe this past weekend in Battle Mountain. The Lady Longhorns are back on the road this week to take on Incline. The first game of the series takes place on Friday at 3 p.m. The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday at 10 a.m. Battle Mountain returns home to play Silver Stage on Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader with the Nighthawks on Saturday, March 30, starting at 10 a.m. 

Longhorns wins two of three games from Lakers

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team jumped into league play this past weekend at home and won two of three games from North Tahoe. Longhorns lose opener to Lakers Battle Mountain dropped the opener to North Tahoe 8-7 on Friday, giving up as 6-3 lead.

Shorthorn volleyball named league champs

The Battle Mountain Junior High eighth grade volleyball team captured the league title last weekend at home. They beat Lovelock in the first round and defeated Winnemucca in the championship series.  The team includes Elizabeth Rosas, Mackenzie Lemaire, Lynzee Devlin, Drue Domagala, Carlee Peterson, Jocelin Cortes, Grace Melver, Coach Hutchison,Sarahi Jimenez, Sruti Bhakta, Alma Chavira, Uliana Willinghamand Isabella DeAllah.

Shorthorns wrestlers prepare for championship tournament

As the Northern Nevada Junior High Wrestling season winds down, the Shorthorn wrestlers are cranking up the intensity and getting ready for the Tah-Neva League Championship Tournament.  “The kids wrestled hard this weekend,” said coach Mitch Domagala. “They are getting the basics down and continue to improve each time out. We have one more week, so we need to correct a few things and we’ll be in good shape.”

BMHS' Melver, Bhakta named to Northern 2A all-league, first team

Battle Mountain's Grace Melver (left) and Sruti Bhakta were named to the Northern 2A all-league, first team by the leagues coaches for their performance during the league basketball season. Bhakta was also named the Northern 2A Defensive Player of the Year. 

Shorthorn wrestlers compete in Fernley

Fernley was the destination for the Shorthorn wrestlers as they hit the road in the early morning hours to continue their Tah-Neva season.  Eleven other teams were waiting as the Battle Mountain team got their second tournament of the season in the books.  When it was all done the ‘Horns were in 4th place as a team.  

Shorthorns start Tah-Neva season

Ten teams from throughout Northern Nevada meet in the Pershing County High School gym as the 2019 Tah-Neva league season got underway.  As the dust settled, the final standings saw the ‘Horns in 3rd place at the end of the day.  “The kids wrestled hard today.  They were aggressive and battled in every match,” commented coach Mike Williams.

Lady Longhorns come up short in bid for state tournament

Coming into the Northern 2A Regional Basketball Championships last weekend at Sparks High School, the Battle Mountain girls liked the position it was in entering as the No. 3 seed. Battle Mountain would face Incline, a team it beat by 29 points on the last day of January in Incline Village. The two teams were back together on Friday afternoon for a spot in the state tournament.

Battle Mountain boys Cinderella run ends in 2A regional semifinals

A year after playing in the state tournament, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team was looking to get back to the ultimate prize but would need help getting there. The Longhorns nearly accomplished the Cinderella feat, only to come up short in the semifinals of the Northern 2A Regional Championship at Sparks High School this past weekend. Battle Mountain needed a 65-62 win over White Pine last Wednesday in a play-in game to get into the tournament. Battle Mountain pulled off an upset on Thursday afternoon, beating Yerington 58-53 in overtime to keep its season alive.
