Barto wins barrel racing average at White Pine rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its second stop of the fall season in Ely on Sept. 7-8 for the White Pine rodeo. Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto led the way in the barrel racing average with a time of 34.933 seconds. She won the first performance at 17.339 and was the runner-up in the second performance.

Battle Mountain falls to Dayton in non-league play

The Battle Mountain High School football team dropped a 28-6 decision to Dayton on Friday night at Tim Knight Field in Battle Mountain.

Battle Mountain splits with Silver Stage, Sierra Lutheran

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team came away with a split of two Northern 2A matches this past weekend at home and sit at 4-3 in league play. “The matches were fought hard this weekend as we tried out a new rotation as we are nearing the down slide of our season,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We are working at utilizing more hitters on the net.”

BMHS splits four Northern 2A matches

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team picked up two wins in four matches over a two-week stretch, with three of those matches against the tougher teams in the Northern 2A. Battle Mountain traveled to Incline on Aug. 30, and lost in three sets. The Lady Longhorns took the Highlanders to the max in the opening set but lost 26-24. Incline closed out the day, winning the final two sets 25-19 and 25-12. Senior Stevlana Martinez led the way with five kills and five blocks, with Addison Matheus adding two kills.

Battle Mountain cruises to shutout in home opener against Silver Stage

The home opener for the Battle Mountain High School football team was all but over before it got started. The Longhorns posted their second consecutive shutout, blanking Silver Stage 45-0 on Friday night at Tim Knight Field. Battle Mountain moved to 1-0 in the Northern 2A and 2-1 overall.

Lady Longhorns start season at White Pine tournament

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team climbed onto the bus this past weekend for a two-day tournament at White Pine High School in Ely. “Ever since White Pine went to Southern 2A, this tournament allows us to play some teams we wouldn’t normally see in our regular season,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez.” “It was a great opportunity to play Milford this year because they have incredible court sense and run their offense well. We look forward to attending next fall”.

Serna earns high-point honors at High Country Short Course Championships

Battle Mountain’s Nevaeh Serna and her NNA swim coach Michael Hall attended the High Country Short Course Championships in Minden from Aug. 2-4. Serna earned high-point honors in the 11-12-year-old division for girls. She will age up on Sept. 6, and is looking forward to the new challenges the older kids will bring.

Battle Mountain NNA swim team takes part in Silver State Championships in Reno

The Battle Mountain NNA swim team was recently in Reno for the Silver State Championships, a home meet for the club that is based out of Reno. Temperatures rose to 105 degrees but high winds and lightning played havoc with the championships All of the preliminary races were held but just one final was completed and prelim times carried over to the finals.

It has been years in the making with hard work and set backs but the dream for Battle Mountain’s Devin Huhta is here, as he is competing at the USA Paralympics Track and Field Trials in Miramar, Fla.

National High School Finals Rodeo stars Sunday in Wyoming

The long high school rodeo season is hitting an end with the beginning of the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Sunday. The rodeo runs through July 20, with the top 20 finals. A number of cowboys and cowgirls from the Humboldt County and Battle Mountain rodeo clubs will compete.

Battle Mountain NNA swim team starts summer long-course season in Carson City

The Battle Mountain NNA swim team began its long course season for the summer at the 2024 Intermountain Classic LC Swim Meet in Carson City from May 24-26. There were a lot of time improvements and coach Hall was pleased with the first meet of the summer season. Beckett and Barrett Buffington competed in their first long-course meet.

Stuart wins 2A triple jump state championship

In his final meet of his high school career, Battle Mountain High School’s Blake Stuart won the 2A triple jump at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Carson High School in Carson City. Stuart came into the finals second in the seeding, but saved his best for last with a personal-best leap of 41 feet, 8.75 inches.

Battle Mountain baseball closes season with split at North Tahoe

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team rounded out its season this past Friday in Tahoe City, Calif., with a doubleheader against North Tahoe. The Lakers won the opener 5-2, with the Longhorns bouncing back to win the season finale 7-6. Battle Mountain concluded the year at 6-19 overall and 5-18 in the Northern 2A.
