Lady Longhorns remain undefeated on the season

The Battle Mountain High School softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with five more wins this past week — all on the road. Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday, April 27, and came back home with a 16-4 victory over its rival. The Lady Longhorns plated five runs a piece in each of the first two innings and added three more in the third to build a 13-0 advantage.  The Mustangs scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the third inning but that proved to be all the offense for Pershing County.

Battle Mountain Rodeo Club competes in Winnemucca

The Battle Mountain High School Rodeo Club made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the Humboldt County High School Club rodeo. The regular season concludes May 14-16 in Wells and Nevada High School Rodeo Association returns to Winnemucca for the high school and junior high school state finals from May 27-30.

Battle Mountain golfers shine on home course

Golf was played the way it is meant to be last Thursday, as the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team hosted its lone tournament of the year in 80-degree weather and no wind.

BMHS track team opens in Lovelock

The Battle Mountain High School track and field team opened up its season this past Friday at the Pershing County Invitational in Lovelock. On the boys side, Sean Bengoa took home the top spot in the 100-meter dash with a tie of 12.27 seconds, while the sophomore was the runner-up in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches and the long jump at 16-7.

Villanueva ties for fourth in Spring Creek

The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team was in Spring Creek last Thursday for it second tournament of the season. 

Battle Mountain baseball team picks up win over Wells in non-conference play

It was a busy week for the Battle Mountain High School baseball team who played six games in four days. The Longhorns picked up one win in that stretch of contests. Battle Mountain hosted the Elko JV for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 21, and lost 14-1 and 8-2 to the 3A Indians. In the opening game, Elko scored in every inning, building a 5-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. Battle Mountain scored its lone run in the bottom the second, as Shelton Denham crossed the plate for the Longhorns.

The Battle Mountain High School softball team continued its roll in the early part of the season with four more wins this past weekend to improve to 4-0 in league play and 6-0 overall.

Nevada launches 2021 football season ticket renewals, as fans come back

The University of Nevada launched its football season-ticket renewal process and announced a number of new initiatives to enhance the football gameday experience at Mackay Stadium beginning this fall. Season-ticketholders from 2019 should receive the 2021 Nevada Football Season Ticket Brochure via email with instructions on how to renew tickets, and doing so online is the most efficient method.

Brady expects to be ready for minicamp after knee surgery

 Tom Brady is recovering from offseason knee surgery and expects to be ready for June minicamp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Speaking at a fundraiser for Bucs coach Bruce Arians’ foundation, the 43-year-old quarterback joked that he didn’t know “if I can go this week.” He then added he is aiming to be back on the field relatively soon for the Super Bowl champions.

Longhorn golfers post two top-10 finishes at West Wendover

One would think starting the season a month later would provide some better weather, but the Northern 2A golf season opened up in less-than-ideal conditions on Thursday, April 15, in West Wendover.

Nevada High School Rodeo Association stops in Sparks at Spanish Springs

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its latest stop in Sparks on April 10-11 with the Spanish Springs High School Rodeo. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo turned in a second-place finish in the barrel racing two-day average with a time of 36.025 seconds. She tied for second in the first go-around at 18.103 and was third in the second performance at 17.992. Garijo was third in pole bending with a combined time of 42.753. She was the runner-up in the second go-around with a time of 21.059.  Garijo was 14th in the breakaway roping, with just one timed run. She had no time in the first go-around and stopped the clock at 4.41 in the second go-around to place ninth in that performance.

Longhorns drop a pair of one-run games to Highlanders

It took nearly seven hours to complete, as the Battle Mountain High School baseball team began its shortened six-week season at home on Saturday afternoon against Incline. Both games of the doubleheader were decided by a run, including the nightcap going eight innings. Incline overcame a 7-3 deficit in game one to win 8-7 and came back for a 9-8 win in the second contest.

European soccer clubs launch breakaway league

A group of 12 elite English, Spanish and Italian clubs dramatically split European soccer on Sunday by announcing the formation of a largely-closed Super League. They are leaving the existing UEFA-run Champions League structure despite warnings they could be kicked out of their domestic competitions and face legal action.

Battle Mountain sweeps Incline in two five-inning games

With a quick turnaround from the end of the fall sports season and a limited number of practices, the Battle Mountain High School softball team took to the field for the first time in its shortened six-week season this past Saturday on its home field. The Lady Longhorns got off to a slow start but quickly gained their feet and swept a doubleheader from Incline 13-3 and 16-6. Both games ended in the fifth inning, due to the 10-run rule.
