When the dust settled on the 2021 Reno Rodeo, there were some very happy rodeo contestants heading out of town. The rodeo marks the start of the busy summer rodeo season and winning here gives contestants momentum as they head into “Cowboy Christmas,” which includes all of the rodeos held over the Fourth-of-July Holiday.
The Lander County Recreation Center is sponsoring a wrestling camp July 13-15, 2021. There will be two sessions per day. The first session is from 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. This session is open to all wrestlers. The second session is from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and is open to wrestlers that will be in grades 5-12 during the upcoming school year.
The Battle Mountain Little League 10-12 year-old, All-Star team will travel to Elko for the District 3 Tournament. Action gets under way on Saturday with four games.
A pair of Battle Mountain swimmers were in Reno the weekend of June 18-20 for the Reno Aquatic Club Gamble. Hot weather and delays greeted the swimmers as competition was delayed three times due to lightning.
Battle Mountain Raceway featured two nights of racing this past Father’s Day weekend on Friday and Saturday, Drivers from around the area competed in the IMCA Modified division, Hobby Stocks, Mini-Gen X, Dwarf and Mini Sprints. Kart races were held on Saturday morning. The next scheduled races is set for July 16-17.
The Battle Mountain Little League 10-12 year-old All-Stars played host to the District 3 Tournament this past weekend. Battle Mountain opened the tournament with a win over Ruby Mountain on Saturday afternoon. Battle Mountain dropped a winner's bracket game to White Pine on Sunday morning and was eliminated from the tournament later on Sunday with a loss to Ruby Mountain. Ruby Mountain and White Pine played for the District 3 championship on Monday, with the winner advancing to Yerington for the state tournament to be held July 16-18.
The Battle Mountain Little League Junior All-Stars finished second in the District 3 Tournament that was held this past weekend in Battle Mountain. Battle Mountain dropped its opening game of the tournament to White Pine 10-6 on Friday night. Battle Mountain came back on Saturday morning and beat Walker River 22-6. Battle Mountain advanced to the championship game on Sunday with a win over White Pine on Saturday night. Elko defeated Battle Mountain on Sunday to capture the District 3 championship and advance to Yerington for the state tournament to be held July 16-18.

Two days after losing its NCAA super regional opener by 19 runs, Jose Torres hit a tiebreaking home run in the top of the ninth inning off SEC pitcher of the year Kevin Kopps and NC State beat the Razorbacks 3-2 in the deciding Game 3. Tennessee defeated LSU 15-6 and Texas beat South Florida 12-4 to complete two-game sweeps, and Arizona won a three-game series with a 16-3 victory over Mississippi.
California voters will wait 16 months before weighing in on a tribal-backed ballot referendum that asks them to legalize sports betting. Whatever occurs, it won’t change the opinion of gaming observers. The Athlon Sports Preseason All-Mountain West Teams came out and Nevada boasted a conference-best 15 selections and six players earning seven first-team nods. The Pack, which went 7-2 a season ago and captured the 2020 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl title with a convincing 38-27 victory over Tulane, paced the conference in first-team selections, with six players earning seven selections. Quarterback Carson Strong, the reigning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, headlined the First Team offense alongside the conference’s leading receiver in 2020, Romeo Doubs, its top tight end, Cole Turner, and offensive lineman Aaron Frost.
The annual RPM Fundamental Basketball Camp will be held July 19-21 at the Battle Mountain Recreation Center.
Following a historic 2021 campaign, the Nevada baseball team placed a league-high seven players on the 2021 All-Mountain West team, led by senior Dillan Shrum earning Tony Gwynn Player of the Year honors and T.J. Bruce being named the league's Coach of the Year. This is the second Coach of the Year honor for Bruce after he also earned the award in 2018.
The Battle Mountain NNA Swim Team was in Carson City from May 28-31 for four days of swimming at the Carson City 2021 Intermountain Class. The group is coached by Michelle Hall.
A handful of Battle Mountain High School Rodeo Club members are headed to the National High School Finals Rodeo, which takes place July 18-24 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. The athletes earned that right with their finishes at the Nevada State High School Finals Rodeo, held over Memorial Day weekend at the Winnemucca Event Center.
