The Battle Mountain High School football team saw its schedule change in the final week of the season, with a trip to Dayton instead of Reno. The Longhorns were originally scheduled to play Coral Academy at Wooster High School this past Saturday, but that game was canceled and the Longhorns took on Dayton instead.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team was busy this past week with three matches on the scheduled slate. Battle Mountain hosted Pershing County on Tuesday, March 30, and beat the Lady Mustangs 25-19, 25-21 and 26-24. The Lady Longhorns traveled to Yerington on Friday night and lost in four sets to the Lions. Battle Mountain played its home finale on Saturday afternoon and Silver Stage left with a 25-23, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-17 win over the Lady Longhorns. Battle Mountain is now 6-5 on the season.
It has been one of those years where if the Battle Mountain High School football team had any luck, it would be bad luck. The Longhorns played its home finale on Saturday night, honoring a handful of seniors, but once again found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard. Incline came to town and left with a 17-8 victory, dropping the Longhorns to 1-3 on the season. Battle Mountain’s three losses have been by a combined 13 points.
The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team was in action just once last week, with a road trip to West Wendover on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines notched a 7-1 win over the Longhorns, scoring five times in the first 40 minutes of play.
The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team split a pair of matches this past week, losing 4-1 to Pershing County on Wednesday, March 31, and beating West Wendover 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Longhorns played their final home game of the shortened season against rival Pershing County and honored its three seniors Jackie La Riva, Reagan Buller and Giovanna Ortiz.
It took a little longer than planned, but the three seniors on the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team were able to play on their home course. The original tournament scheduled for Mountain View Golf Course in early March was postponed due to snow.
The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team dropped its last two matches, both on the road. The Lady Longhorns (1-3) traveled to Lovelock on Wednesday, March 17, and lost 4-2 to rival Pershing County.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team knocked off Wells and West Wendover last week. On Tuesday, March 23, the Lady Longhorns swept the Leopards 25-19, 25-10 and 25-16 in a non-conference match-up. On Friday, Battle Mountain hit the road and beat West Wendover in four sets, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24 and 25-14.
The Battle Mountain NNA swim team returned to the pool for a two-day event in Reno. Due to Covid rules, no spectators were allowed and swimmers had to wait outside in chilly conditions before swimming in their events.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team collected a non-conference victory last Thursday, with a three set sweep of Wells. The Lady Longhorns narrowly won set one 25-22 and kept the momentum in the final two sets 25-19 and 25-13.
The weather this spring hasn’t been the kindness to the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team this spring. The Lady Longhorns had their tournament postponed on March 11, due to snow, but the Battle Mountain girls received some nice weather on St. Patrick’s Day at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
Saturday’s meeting between the Lowry High School football team had a playoff atmosphere to it, with the brown dormant grass and the cold, wet and windy conditions usually fitted for November. Fernley came in as the reigning 3A state champion from 2019, but during that season, the Vaqueros lost to the Buckaroos. The Vaqueros would trail early on Saturday afternoon, but rallied to beat the Buckaroos 50-21. For Lowry (2-1), it was the first loss of the season.
The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team netted a split of two homecoming matches this past weekend. On Friday afternoon, Battle Mountain overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat White Pine 4-1. In the first meeting this year, the two teams tied. The Longhorns were back on their home field on Saturday and lost 8-0 to Sage Ridge to drop to 1-2-1 on the year. Against White Pine, Battle Mountain had more offensive and scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes of the match, trying to use the strong winds to its advantage.
After more than 15 months, the Battle Mountain High School football team was back on Tim Knight Field in its second game of the shortened spring season in northern Nevada. The Longhorns took on rival Yerington and if you were looking for offense, you were in the wrong place. Both defenses dominated the night as the two squads combined for 14 punts. Yerington used a touchdown late in the first half to hold on for a 7-6 victory.
The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team stands at 0-1-1 on the season after its first two matches. The Longhorns opened the year on Saturday, March 6, at home with a 3-3 tie to White Pine.
