The Battle Mountain NNA swim team was in Roseville, Calif., for the CCA Spook-Tacular, which included 23 teams and 882 swimmers. Nevaeh Serna cut nearly 13 seconds off her time in the 200-yard individual medley to place fourth with a time of 2:59.30. She placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:13.18, a .91-second improvement and she knocked off 6.44 seconds in the 100-yard individual medley to finish ninth with a time of 1:22.60.
The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team closed out its home schedule this past Thursday night against rival Pershing County at Tim Knight Field.
The Battle Mountain High School boys cross country team wrapped up its regular season this past Friday afternoon in Carson City at the Sierra Lutheran High School Dave Marson Trail Race.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team wrapped up its final regular season road trip of the season this past weekend. Battle Mountain was in Lovelock on Friday to take on rival Pershing County.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action in Elko on Oct. 8-10. And once again local clubs shined at the competition. Emma Garijo turned a strong performance for the Humboldt County Rodeo Club, winning the barrel racing average with a combined time of 31.646 seconds. She won the first performance at 15.873 and was third in the second performance in a time of 15.773. Garijo also earned all-around cowgirl honors. In addition, Garijo led the way in pole bending with an average time of 42.345.

The Pershing County soccer team has four more goals to its credit. Last Thursday, Oct. 21, they traveled to Battle Mountain to play the Longhorns. The game tied up at zero for the first 20 minutes. That’s when Yasmin Acosta found the goal and took a shot. Within minutes, Kylee Fuller took a rebound off a Battle Mountain player and blasted it past their goalkeeper, ending the half at 2-0.
One of the longest-running rivalries was back on the field this past Friday night in Lovelock, as the Battle Mountain High School football team took on Pershing County at Joe Yanni Field. The Longhorns locked up a playoff spot and the likely No. 3 seed in the NIAA State Championships with a 45-22 win to improve to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Northern 2A.
Carson Strong passed for 395 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns and Nevada pulled away after halftime to beat Hawaii 34-17 in Mountain West Conference play on Saturday.
The Battle Mountain High School cross country team made its way to Wells this past Friday afternoon for the Wells Invitational at Chimney Rock Golf Course. Sophomore Spencer Thompson placed 29th in the varsity boys race with a time of 23:46 and fellow sophomore Julian Sosa was 33rd in a time of 24:18.
The Battle Mountain High School girls golf team closed out its fall season at the NIAA 2A State Championships on Oct. 12-13 at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley.
Despite a slow start on its Homecoming night, the Battle Mountain High School football team rallied for the final 32 points of the game to beat Coral Academy out of Reno 38-9 to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Northern 2A. “It was a good way for us to bounce back,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “This is probably the best team Coral has had. They have been ahead of Yerington and play with the top teams for about a half. They just kind of run out of gas at the end and that is what happened tonight.”
The Northern 2A East girls golf league held its regional championship this past Thursday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Due to Covid restrictions, Battle Mountain had to play by themselves on Friday in less than ideal conditions, as a steady rain fell for the golfers during the early morning.
The Battle Mountain High School boys cross country was in Winnemucca this past Friday for the Lowry Invitational. After a steady rain for much of the morning, skies cleared, giving the cross country runners excellent conditions to run into. Battle Mountain sophomore Spencer Thompson was fifth in the junior varsity boys race with a time of 20 minutes, 16 seconds. Teammate Julian Sosa was 17th at 24:12.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team headed out on the road last week for matches at Silver Stage and Yerington. The Lady Longhorns knocked off the Nighthawks 25-21, 25-12 and 25-22 on Friday evening, but lost to the Lions on Saturday afternoon. Christina Holley had 12 kills on the day, with Brynnlee Freeman adding nine. Holley also had a block in the victory.
