Members of the Battle Mountain High School boys golf team closed out its season at the NIAA 2A State Championships at Chimera Golf Club in Henderson on May 16-17.
After recovering from an injury at the start of the school year, Battle Mountain High School senior Nolan Chopp closed out his high school career in style by winning the 2A discus this past weekend at the NIAA State Championships at Reed High School in Sparks. Chopp threw a personal-best 137 feet, 11 inches to win the discus by more than 11 feet. North Tahoe’s Juan Camacho-Morales was second at 126 and Lake Mead’s Caleb King (120-0) and Pershing County’s Brayden Wagner (117-1) were third and fourth, respectively.
The 2021-22 high school sports season comes to an end this weekend with the spring sports state championships.

Sean Scherer and Zach Duggan led a 1-2 finish in the pole vault for Battle Mountain, as Scherer cleared the bar 8 feet, 6 inches and Duggan set a personal best at 8-0.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and One Nevada Credit Union are pleased to announce $20,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded for the NIAA / One Nevada Top Ten Student Athletes of the Year program. The student-athletes of the year awards are presented to the top students who excel in sports, maintain a high academic status, and volunteer in their community.
The regular season for the Lowry High School boys golf team and the rest of the Northern 3A came to a close last week at Genoa Lakes Golf Course with the South Tahoe High School tournament.
The final high school regional tournaments of the school year get under way throughout Northern Nevada this week. Lowry High School will host the Northern 3A baseball and softball regional championship, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. In softball on Thursday, Lowry takes on Elko at 10 a.m., with the winner to face Fernley at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Churchill County takes on Spring Creek at 12:15 p.m. and the winner plays North Valleys at 4:15 p.m.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team concluded its regular season this past week with a three-game series in West Wendover. The Lady Longhorns blanked the Wolverines in the opener on Thursday 10-0 and split a doubleheader on Friday, winning 14-13 and losing 12-11. attle Mountain ended the regular season at 18- overall and 12-6 in the Northern 2A.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team concluded its regular season with a short trip this past Saturday to Winnemucca for the Lowry Invitational.
The Northern 3A and Lowry High School boys golf team was back on the course last week for a pair of tournaments in Elko County. The week began with a trip to Spring Creek on Monday, April 25, where the Buckaroo finished second with a round of 366. Truckee maintained its lead in the league, winning the tournament with a 347. Elko was third at 370 and Fernley (372) and Spring Creek (403) rounded out the top five.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team all but clinched a spot in the Northern 2A Regional Championships with a come-from-behind win against rival Pershing County on Saturday in Battle Mountain. The three-game series tarted last week on Tuesday, April 26, in Lovelock with Pershing County holding on for a 7-6 win. The series moved to Battle Mountain this past Saturday, with the Mustangs winning game one 13-2. The Lady Longhorns trailed 11-10 in the series finale but score a pair of runs to secure a 12-11 win. The Lady Longhorns are 16-7 overall and 10-5 in the Northern 2A.
Producers of the world’s richest one-day roping competition – the annual Bob Feist Invitational – moved the 45-year-old BFI to Oklahoma amid the pandemic after 37 years in Reno, but are bringing their $2.9 million event back to Reno for one “final showdown” this summer. In the last year of its contract with the Reno Rodeo, Ullman Peterson Events’ BFI will produce Championship Week this June, including the Resistol Reno Open presented by The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino.
