Battle Mountain’s Nevaeh Serna swam for the Battle Mountain NNA Swim team at the 2022 Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships this past weekend in Morgan Hill, Calif. She was the only NNA swimmer to qualify for the Far Western Championships.
Nevada football is set for the first ever Battle Born Showdown, sponsored by River City Logistics, on April 23 at 6 p.m. inside Mackay Stadium.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled Reno this past Friday for the North Valleys Relays. Nolan Chopp set a season best in the discus to place fifth with a toss of 117 feet, 10 inches. The senior placed eighth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 40-8.
Three members of the Lowry High School track and field team made their way to California and the Sierra Nevada Mountains this past Friday to take part in the Colfax Invitational in Colfax, Calif.
After winning its first six Northern 2A games by forfeit, the Battle Mountain High School softball team got to see its first league action on the field with a road trip to Yerington this past weekend. The Lions, who are undefeated on the season, stayed that way, sweeping the Lady Longhorns in three games. Yerington won the series opener on Friday 7-3 and swept a doubleheader on Saturday 7-1 and 5-3. Battle Mountain dropped to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the Northern 2A.
After opening with five straight wins in the Northern 2A, the Battle Mountain High School baseball team suffered its first losses in league play this past weekend in Yerington. The Lions won all three games of the tripleheader to drop the Longhorns to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the Northern 2A. Yerington won the first game on Friday 8-0 and swept Saturday’s games 5-2 and 13-4.
The Battle Mountain Little League held its opening ceremonies this past Saturday morning. The league grew by more than 80 players from a year ago and there are nearly 320 players. Aaron Dorman threw the first pitch out to his grandson Matthew and January Baker sang the National Anthem.
The Battle Mountain NNA Swim Team was back in the pool March 26-27 in Reno for Northern Nevada Aquatics Age Group Open. The group had a number of great performances and continue to improve their times. Nevaeh Serna earned high-point on the weekend and qualified for two more events for the Far Westerns.
Nevada football alumni and NFL stars, Joel Bitonio and Austin Corbett in collaboration with presenting sponsor, Home Means Nevada, Co., will be hosting a free football camp for kids between 3rd-8th grade from 2-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Mackay Stadium. Attendees will run through drills, play mini games, and learn fundamental football techniques.
The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team enjoyed the home cooking of its home course to place second on Wednesday, March 30. Seven other teams from around Nevada visited Mountain View Golf Course, where the weather was ideal.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team was busy last week with five games and the Longhorns came out on top in all five contests. The Longhorns stepped out of league play on Tuesday, March 29, and swept Carlin in a doubleheader in Carlin. Battle Mountain won game one 22-4 and the nightcap 16-0, which included a perfect game from Marcos Jimenez. In the opener against Carlin, Battle Mountain led 15- after the top of the third inning after scoring nine runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
The first month of the season for the Battle Mountain High School softball team has been an odd one to say the least. The Lady Longhorns opened the season in the first week of March at the Pershing County tournament in Lovelock. Battle Mountain got one day of play in, before bad weather wiped out the final day of play. After a week off in the schedule, Battle Mountain was set to take on Silver Stage in a three-game series on its home field to begin Northern 2A action. The Nighthawks decided to forfeit and not make the trip. The Lady Longhorns was supposed to be back in Battle Mountain this past weekend to play Incline for three games. The Highlanders informed the Lady Longhorns that they would not make the trip out to the east side of the state.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski refused to let his players ponder the possibility of facing North Carolina for the first time in the NCAA Tournament after the Blue Devils had punched their Final Four ticket with a win over Arkansas. They have no choice but to think about it now.
Winning by now should be old hat for Scottie Scheffler. Sunday in the Dell Technologies Match Play was special for so many reasons, and the new No. 1 player in the world couldn’t hide it. Moments after Scheffler closed out Kevin Kisner on the 15th hole to win for the third time in five starts, the 25-year-old Texan was overcome by tears and hugs, from his wife to his parents and sisters and pretty much everyone who could get a piece of him at Austin Country Club. From a top junior in Dallas to four years as a Texas Longhorn to his time outside the ropes at the Match Play watching the world’s best, all Scheffler wanted to do was play alongside them.
Standing at the top of the ladder, Lexie Hull got the final snip with the scissors, drawing one of the loudest cheers of the night as she draped the net around her neck. Hull did all she could to get defending national champion Stanford back to her hometown for the Spokane Regional. Then, she became the catalyst for getting the Cardinal back to the women’s Final Four.
