Lady Longhorns win twice at Comstock Classic

In its final games of the calendar year, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team collected two wins in three games last weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

Bonds, Clemens left out of Baseball Hall of Fame again; McGriff elected

Moments after Fred McGriff was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, almost two decades after his final game, he got the question. Asked if Barry Bonds belonged in Cooperstown, a smiling McGriff responded: “Honestly, right now, I’m going to just enjoy this evening.” A Hall of Fame committee delivered its answer Sunday, passing over Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling while handing McGriff the biggest honor of his impressive big league career.

Battle Mountain boys pick up two wins at Serpent Classic

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up two wins in five games this past weekend at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne. The Longhorns played a pair of games last Thursday to start the season, losing to Churchill County 60-28 in the opening game. Later that night, Battle Mountain took on host Mineral County and lost 41-34. The Serpents lost in the 1A state semifinals last year to Green Valley Christian.

With a new look on the bench in Michael Speers, who replaced longtime coach Paul Tremayne, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team started its season with three wins at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne this past weekend.

Nevada football team announces future games with Penn State, Troy

Nevada Football announced two future non-conference opponents, including season openers for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The Wolf Pack will visit Penn State, Aug. 30, 2025, and will play a home-and-home series with Troy, with the 2024 opener taking place Aug. 31 at Troy, and the Trojans visiting Reno, Sept. 13, 2031.

Battle Mountain NNA swim team competes at state championships

The Battle Mountain NNA swim team was in Henderson from Nov. 10-13 for the 2022 Nevada State Short Course Championships at Heritage Park Aquatics Center. There were 733 swimmers that competed over four days in cold conditions in southern Nevada. Sandpiper from Las Vegas, which had 472 swimmers won the team title. 

Green, Holani help Boise St. beat Nevada 41-3

Taylen Green passed for a touchdown and ran for another score in the first quarter, George Holani finished with 17 carries for 115 yards and two TDs to help Boise State beat Nevada 41-3 Saturday night.

Battle Mountain volleyball season ends with loss to Incline in 2A regional tournament

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team had its season come to an end this past Friday night in Yerington at the Northern 2A Regional Championships.

San Jose State rallies for emotional win over Nevada

Chevan Cordeiro passed for 340 yards and two touchdowns, Kairee Robinson ran for two big scores and San Jose State rallied for an emotional 35-28 victory over Nevada on Saturday night. San Jose State postponed its football game last weekend after freshman running back Camdan McWright was killed when he was hit by a school bus while riding a scooter near campus. 

Michigan St suspends 4 players for tunnel melee at Michigan

Michigan State has suspended four players for their role in roughing up Michigan players in a stadium tunnel after losing the game. Spartans coach Mel Tucker announced Sunday night that linebacker Tank Brown, safety Angelo Grose, defensive end Zion Young and cornerback Khary Crump were suspended immediately.
