Golden Knights fire coach

Gerard Gallant was abruptly fired by the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday less than two years after leading them to the Stanley Cup Final in their first season of existence and winning NHL coach of the year honors along the way. Peter DeBoer, fired last month by the San Jose Sharks, takes over immediately and will be the Vegas coach the rest of the season. General manager Kelly McCrimmon announced the change in the aftermath of a 4-2 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday night that dropped Vegas out of a playoff position in the Western Conference. The Golden Knights have lost four in a row, matching the longest point drought in their brief franchise history.

Lowry sweeps road games from South Tahoe, Dayton

Last week’s road trip to South Tahoe and Dayton provided two completely different styles of basketball for the Lowry High School boys. The Buckaroos were in South Tahoe on Friday, Jan. 10, where the game was played at a quick pace up and down the floor.  On Saturday, Jan. 11, Lowry was in Dayton, where the game was played a snail’s pace. Lowry was able to adapt to both styles, beating South Tahoe 82-68 and Dayton 39-35 to improve to 7-1 in the Northern 3A and 10-4 overall. In the win over South Tahoe, Lowry got off to a quick start and led by double figures early in the second quarter. However, the Buckaroos had to change the lineup around a bit, when Kobe Stoker left in the second quarter due to an ankle injury. “I don’t think that kid has ever played a full four quarters at South Tahoe,” said LHS coach Chad Peters. “He has gotten hurt every time we go up there. But, he will be ready for Fallon.”

MLB to investigate reports Red Sox stole signs

Major League Baseball says it will investigate allegations the Boston Red Sox illegally used their video replay room to steal signs between opposing pitchers and catchers during their 2018 World Series championship season.  The claims were made Tuesday in a report by The Athletic. The website cited three anonymous sources it said were with the Red Sox during the 2018 season who said some players visited the replay room during games to get information on sign sequences. Those sources told The Athletic that the Red Sox weren’t able to do it during the postseason because of in-person monitors used by MLB in those games.
