McDermitt boys fall to Eureka

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team wrapped up the first half of the Eastern 1A schedule last Friday in Eureka  The Bulldogs got off to a good start, but a sluggish second and third quarter led to a 66-46 defeat to the Vandals. McDermitt led by two points, 14-12, after eight minutes of play, only to see Eureka catch fire on offense with a 24-point second quarter. The Vandal run allowed them to go into halftime with a 36-26 lead.

Lady Bucks split with Fernley, Sparks

Midway through the season, the Fernley High School girls basketball team has proved to be the best team in the Northern 3A. However, the Lowry girls, who have played in the last six Northern 3A Regional Championship games are doing its best to get back to that finale and possibly knock off the Vaqueros. It was an ugly night back in early December, as Fernley beat Lowry 64-39 in Winnemucca in the Northern 3A league opener.  The Vaqueros entered the night with a veteran group, while the Lady Bucks were returning just three players from the previous squad that played in the state tournament.

Peterson, Mattson win at Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic in Fernley

The Lowry High School wrestling team wrapped up its regular season this past weekend with a third-place finish the 20th annual Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic in Fernley. Spanish Springs, the two-time defending 4A state champion, won the tournament with 258 points, while host Fernley was second at 211. Lowry had 178.50 points and Carson (147) and Yerington (143) rounded out the top five.

Rural basketball back in action in McDermitt

Remember the primary objectives of rural basketball are to teach the players the fundamental skills of basketball, including the rules, to practice good sportsmanship (that means it should be exhibited by coaches, players, and fans), and to have fun while learning to lose as well as win. With that being said this past weekend’s games were hosted by McDermitt. They had Indian tacos, popcorn, and a full concession stand. The referees were Sean Millikan and Jeff Thompson. 

Sheffield hired as Wolf Pack’s special teams coordinator

Jay Norvell has announced the hiring of Thomas Sheffield as the special teams coordinator for the Nevada football team. Sheffield comes to Nevada from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where had a successful three-year run as the Golden Lions’ special teams, coordinator and tight ends coach.  He also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Golden Lions. Sheffield previously worked with Nevada’s former special teams coach Tommy Perry at North Texas.

Best tabbed to lead the Union for Nevada

Bill Best, who coached at Rice for the past two seasons and who had a successful run as the line coach and run-game coordinator at Stephen F. Austin, has been hired by Jay Norvell as Nevada’s offensive line coach.

Lowry boys split with Fernley, Sparks

When the Lowry High School boys basketball team played Fernley early in December in Winnemucca, everything went right for the Buckaroos.  Lowry knocked down 16 3-pointers on their way to a 100-49 victory. The Vaqueros entered the contest short-handed, missing four of their starters. So, when the two teams got together for the second meeting of the year, the game figured to be much closer.

Lady Bulldogs beat Carlin, fall to Owyhee

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team began a four-game road trip this past weekend in Elko County. The Lady Bulldogs collected a 61-21 win at Carlin on Friday, Jan. 17, but lost 55-43 to Owyhee on Saturday afternoon and now sit at 2-3 in the Eastern 1A and 8-6 overall.

McDermitt boys basketball team splits with Carlin, Owyhee

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team hit the road last weekend for a pair of Eastern 1A games and came home with a split. The Bulldogs are now 2-4 in league play and 4-13 overall.

Lowry wrestlers knock off Yerington in senior night dual

Two of the most stories wrestling programs in Nevada history got together on Wednesday night for a dual as part of Lowry High School’s senior night. Yerington, of the Northern 2A, made the trip down to Winnemucca to take on the Buckaroos. 

Peterson, Mattson finish second at Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational

The Lowry High School wrestling team was back on the mats last weekend in Elko County for the annual Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational that draws teams from Idaho and southern Nevada. The Buckaroos placed seventh in the field of nearly 30 teams with 126 points, as host Spring Creek ran away with the title with 306 points. Fernley was second at 189.50 and Caldwell, Idaho (184.50), Virgin Valley (183) and Twin Falls, Idaho, (149) rounded out the top five. “This is one of the better tournaments we go to,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “You had some of these weight classes that were stacked with some really good wrestlers. We picked up a couple good wins, but lost a couple that we shouldn’t have had. I am that guy that looks at those losses and thinks what we could have done better to win it.”

Nevada falls to San Diego St.

San Diego State home basketball games are starting to feel like they did back in the Kawhi Leonard era, when a packed Viejas Arena rocked and the Aztecs reached the Sweet 16 for the first time. This time, it’s a trio of transfers leading the No. 7 Aztecs back into national prominence. New Zealander Yanni Wetzell stepped up with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds Saturday night for SDSU, which got hot in the second half and beat Nevada 68-55 to remain the nation’s only undefeated team.

Nevada football to play at Minnesota

The University of Nevada football team will travel to play Minnesota in 2024 as part of its non-conference schedule, the schools announced today.

Fallon races past Lowry to secure second place in Northern 3A

The last time the Lowry High School boys basketball team and Fallon met, the Greenwave were completing a last-minute comeback in the Northern 3A regional semifinals in Reno last February. Fallon eventually won in overtime and the state championship a week later. The two rivals got back together again in Winnemucca on Friday night, with Fallon earning a convincing 75-47 win over Lowry.  The Greenwave moved into sole possession of second place in the Northern 3A at 8-1, while the Buckaroos dropped to third place at 7-2 and 10-5 overall.

Lady Bucks knock off Greenwave for first time since 2016 regional championship

The last time the Lowry High School girls basketball team knocked off Fallon, all of its players were in junior high or middle school. That all changed this past Friday night, as the Lady Bucks beat the Greenwave 42-36, for its first victory over the school since the Northern 3A regional championship game in 2016 when Lowry won on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Alyssa Kuskie.
