Lowry boys basketball team splits with Elko, Spring Creek

It was billed as an early-season battle for first place in the Northern 3A boys basketball standings, but Friday night’s game between rivals Lowry and Elko turned into a one-sided affair in favor of the visiting Indians. Elko held Lowry to single digits in each of the first three quarters in a 67-34 win, handing the Buckaroos their first league loss. “The biggest thing I was disappointed with was it was one of our biggest games of the year and we didn’t come ready to play,” said LHS coach Chad Peters. "It felt like we didn’t want to take a shot the entire game. We didn’t do anything on offense. Elko is a good team and do what they do. We didn’t match their intensity.”

Lowry (5-1 Northern 3A, 7-6) overall cruised to a 58-40 win over Elko on Friday in Winnemucca and completed the weekend sweep with a 47-42 win over Spring Creek on Saturday.

Justin Thomas grabs a win he thought he had lost

Justin Thomas began the new year mildly disappointed by not having won more than he already has on the PGA Tour.  That’s not to suggest he ever thought it was easy. Sunday at Kapalua was proof of that.

Chiefs among playoff-bound teams with injury concerns

The Kansas City Chiefs will hope for good news about their depleted secondary during their first-round playoff bye week. Safety Juan Thornhill suffered a knee injury in Kansas City’s victory Sunday over the Los Angeles Chargers, which coupled with New England’s loss to Miami gave the Chiefs the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. Thornhill’s injury appeared serious — he needed the help of two trainers to limp off the field, never putting any weight on his knee.

Waiting game: 15 days between CFP semifinals, championship

The matchup is set for a tantalizing College Football Playoff national championship game. On one side, defending champ Clemson, with its 29-game winning streak. On the other, unbeaten and No. 1 LSU, with its record-setting offense and Heisman Trophy winner. But first, we interrupt this playoff for a 15-day break that is far from ideal. LSU and Clemson will play the final game of the 2019 college football season on Jan. 13 in New Orleans after winning semifinals Saturday night. Heisman winner Joe Burrow and his Tigers routed No. 4 Oklahoma 63-28 at the Peach Bowl. Clemson’s No. 3 Tigers beat No. 2 Ohio State 29-23 in a Fiesta Bowl thriller.
