The Lowry High School wrestling team will take seven grapplers to the NIAA 3A State Championships this weekend at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team split a pair of league games at home last weekend, defeating Carlin 51-16 on Friday night and losing 75-49 to Owyhee on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 6-16 overall and 4-7 in the Eastern 1A and have been eliminated from playoff contention. McDermitt had to shake off a slow start to Carlin, before pulling away for the 35-point win. The Bulldogs led by just a point, 10-9, after eight minutes of play and started to stretch the advantage out in the second quarter on the strength of a 19-6 run.
After spending much of January on the road, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team was back home last week for three games. The Lady Bulldogs went 1-2 over the three days and are now 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the Eastern 1A, with one game left in the regular season.
Last Saturday’s rural basketball games were held in Orovada and began with a 24-second moment of silence for Tyler Coble (jersey No. 24), a graduate of McDermitt Combined Schools, and previous coach of the Kings River in 2018. He passed away this past week due to cancer. The first game was a Division II match-up between the Paradise Valley Panthers and McDermitt White Bulldogs. In the first quarter Axtyn Nott scored a 2-point shot as did Cooper Hoagland. Hoagland also made a free throw to follow as he was fouled on the shot, but the bucket went in. In total for the first quarter the Panthers scored five points. Dylan Palmer scored four 2-point shots for McDermitt White, bringing their first quarter score to eight.
Harris scores career-high 38 in win over Falcons
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team split a pair of Eastern 1A games last weekend. The Bulldogs were on their home floor on Friday, Jan. 31, and beat Lund 53-31. McDermitt’s Alex Navarro (16) Enrique Villalobos (14) and Tristan Bitt (13) all reached double figures in the victory to secure the season sweep over the Mustangs. Villalobos had a double-double as he grabbed 14 rebounds to go with two steals and an assist. Braeden Ramsey added six points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists. Steele Crossley and Waylon Nino each had two points. McDermitt jumped out to a 17-7 advantage in the first quarter and held Lund to four points apiece in the second and fourth quarters to outscore them 22-8.
The Lowry High School wrestling team began its postseason run last weekend in Elko with the Northern 3A Duals. The Buckaroos went 7-2 over the two days, with the two defeats coming to Spring Creek and Fernley. The duals are used for seeding purposes for the Northern 3A Regional Championships.
The future wave of Lowry High School wrestlers hit the mat last Wednesday (Jan. 29), as the Junior Buckaroo Wrestling Club held its annual tournament at Winnemucca Junior High School. The tournament was broken into a handful of weight classes and each wrestler had a chance to wrestle multiple times on the night. The wrestlers were awarded ribbons after the action was complete.
There will be some new racing at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway this year, as the Amazing Children’s Racing program will be part of the 2020 race season. Mike Scott from Winnemucca Regional Raceway would like to let everyone know that they are sponsoring a new and exciting children’s race track. The track is being built to accommodate “Quarter Midgets.” These race cars are the 1/4 size of a full midget race car. The cars are designed to be ran on dirt or pavement giving families the option to travel and experience the dreams of becoming a professional race car driver someday.
Even though most of the Winterfest activities were Friday night, the game of the weekend in Winnemucca was on Saturday afternoon, as the Lowry High School girls basketball team hosting Truckee.
Winterfest is usually one of the toughest weeks to get a basketball team ready to play a couple of games on its home floor. The Lowry High School boys could not afford an upset loss after dropping two of its previous three games. Any chances of a let down were avoided, as Lowry beat North Valleys 62-46 on Friday night and Truckee 59-38 on Saturday afternoon.
Adam Thistlewood had a career-high 24 points and Isaiah Stevens hit an 18-footer at the buzzer to lift Colorado State to a 92-91 victory over Nevada on Wednesday night.
Terrance Spann was officially named Dayton High School’s new football coach Monday by Dayton High athletic director David Palmer. Spann was brought into the program in 2017 as the varsity linebacker coach before taking over as the man in charge. It’s a unique situation for Spann after Dayton didn’t field a football program in the fall of 2019 due to low turnout, leaving the new man in charge with one simple goal for his new program.
The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade volleyball team begins its season this Saturday in Lovelock at 9 a.m. The Warriors travel to Sparks and Dillworth Middle School on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and will be home on Saturday, Feb. 8, beginning at 9 a.m. Winnemucca is back in the Reno/Sparks area on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Shaw Middle School and will be in Pyramid Lake on Feb. 15 and McDermitt (Feb. 21).
It proved to be a wild night last Friday, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team made its way to eastern Nevada to Eureka to close out the first half of the Eastern 1A schedule. In what proved to be two totally different halves, Eureka overcame a 21-point, first-half deficit to beat McDermitt 35-32. “As a first year coach at McDermitt it was unlike anything I had ever seen,” said MHS coach April Wilson. McDermitt dominated the first half, leading 15-2 after eight minutes of play and 27-6 at halftime. Junior Katie Crutcher scored all 18 of her points in the first half.
