The pipeline of Lowry High School football players moving on to Eastern Oregon University will continue this fall as Gratian Dawson signed a letter of intent to play for the Mountaineers. He will join past players such as Jace Billingsley, Michal Arenas, Calvin Connors and Luis Cardenas. Victor Rosas, also a Lowry grad, is currently on the roster.
The Humboldt County Rural Basketball League concluded its regular season last week. A Division II contest between McDermitt Blue and the Paradise Panthers kicked off the day’s events. Cayden Crutcher scored three points for Blue in the first quarter with a free throw and a 2-point shot.
As the regular season wrapped up this past weekend in the Northern 3A, the Lowry High School boys basketball team still had work to do to clinch the No. 3 seed for the regional tournament.
The Lowry High School girls basketball team ended its regular season with a breather, as it prepares for this week’s Northern 3A Regional Championships in Fallon.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team closed out its regular season last Friday on its home floor with a 41-29 loss to Eureka. The first half saw both offenses struggle to put points on the board, with neither team scoring more than nine points in each of the first two quarters. Eureka held a slim one-point lead after eight minutes of play, when McDermitt battled back to go in front 15-14 at halftime. The difference on the night proved to be the third quarter, where the Vandals came out of the break with a 13-4 run in the third quarter to pull ahead for good at 27-19.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team closed out its regular season with a split of two road games. The Lady Longhorns cruised to a 38-6 win over Coral Academy on Friday night in Reno. Battle Mountain led 19-0 at halftime and was never challenged in the contest.
The Northern Regional Basketball Championships are under way for area high schools. Pershing County High School and Lovelock will host the Northern 2A tournament from Thursday through Saturday, while Fallon and Churchill County host the 3A championships. The McDermitt High School girls basketball team will make the long trip to Las Vegas for its regional tournament. This year the East and South play each other, with the Southern 1A hosting.
What a way to introduce families to Quarter Midget Racing. Quarter Midgets of America Western Region Director Sunny Phillips and Ashley Davis from Winnemucca Regional Raceway held the first Meet and Greet Saturday Jan.y 26 at The Model-T-Casino. The turnout was a huge success,as local families, track promoters and board members came together with hand shakes and hugs to team up and support the new children’s racing program as a whole. The Nevada region is a strong racing community and loves the fact our smaller racer will now be able to grow and go s future as race car drivers here at their local tracks.
Foley’s Pro Shop out of Reno won the 2020 Don Peters Memorial Tournament held in the first weekend of February at Spare Time Bowl. The Winnemucca Inn provided $2,800 in prize money and Winners Inn contributed $1,000. Nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 93 of them from out of town. Over $10,000 in prize money was awarded as 36 teams competed.
One drought ended for the Lowry High School wrestling team at the NIAA State Championships and the squad is hoping to end another one in the near future. The Buckaroos had not won an individual state championship since Trase Bell in 2016, until this past weekend at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite.
One would have to throw the time machine in reverse for the last time the Lowry High School boys basketball team beat Elko on the Indians’ home floor. It would take traveling back to 2011, when the Buckaroos swept the season series with the Indians. That was until last weekend, when Lowry beat Elko 77-76. It was the first win overall for Lowry over its rival since the 2014 season.
This past weekend marked the fourth week of rural basketball. The games were held in Paradise Valley and the support of their PTO with concessions was greatly appreciated as people munched chorizos, pulled pork, and nachos. Lacey Thompson started off the day singing the Star Spangled Banner and Natalie Mori led the crowd in the pledge of allegiance.. Jeff Thompson and Sean Millikan officiated the games. McDermitt Blue versus McDermitt White started off the days action. In the first quarter, Malissa Hunter and Bryson Hunter both scored a 2-point shot for McDermitt Blue.
With the chance to clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northern 3A Regional Championships, the Lowry High School girls basketball team made its final road trip of the season on Tuesday night in Fallon.
The Lowry High School wrestling team will send seven of its grapplers to this weekend’s NIAA State Championships at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite.
Winnemucca Junior High School hosted a day of volleyball that brought seventh and eighth-grade teams from Lovelock, Pyramid Lake and McDermitt. Winnemucca travels to Sparks on Thursday to play at Shaw Middle School. The Tri-County League moves to Pyramid Lake on Saturday.
