The Lowry High School girls golf team claimed the 3A East title with its win in Elko on Monday, April 5. Lowry shot a season-best 395 in the season finale at Ruby View Golf Course. Elko was second at 404 and Spring Creek (428) was third. Churchill County, Fernley and Dayton did not record a team score.
The Lowry High School volleyball team wrapped up its six-week spring season last Friday night in Fallon against Churchill County. The match-up was a 3A playoff contest, just a week after the two teams played in Winnemucca to end the regular season. The two squads won on each others home floor this season.
The shortened six-week season for the Lowry High School cross country came to end this past Saturday at the Northern 3A Regional Championships Saturday at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team did not have the best of luck against Elko during the regular season in the 3A East this spring. The Indians swept the Buckaroos in both matches by a combined score of 8-0, including a 6-0 victory in Winnemucca on Wednesday, March 31. Two of Lowry’s three losses in league play were to Elko and the two rivals closed out the season on Wednesday, April 7, at Adobe Middle School. At stake was the 3A East title. The two teams did not disappoint as it took longer than the regular 80 minutes to complete. In fact, the match went into double overtime, with the Indians’ scoring the game winner with one minute left in double overtime to claim a 2-1 victory.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made a stop in Alamo on March 27-28, with the Humboldt County and Battle Mountain rodeo clubs picking up event wins in the average. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo won the average in barrel racing with a time of 36.729 seconds. Garijo was tops in the first performance at 18.240 and the runner-up in the second performance with a time of 18.309.
Lowry’s first drive of Saturday’s 3A East football game quickly refocused Fallon on pass defense, part of its bread-and-butter this season. Case in point: The Buckaroos opened the game by mounting a 10-play drive that covered 65 yards, but on the 11th play, Fallon’s Francisco Tapia picked off a pass in the end zone. Buoyed by the defensive play, the Wave then scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and rolled for a 49-13 win at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
The Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club took part in its first tournament of the season on Tuesday, March 30, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Gail Piquet was low gross in the first flight at 98 in the gross and net tournament.
After picking up just a tie in the first half of the 3A East season, the Lowry High School girls soccer team closed the second half with a 2-2-1 record to finish the regular season at 2-6-2 and fourth place in the 3A league standings. Lowry traveled to Elko this past Friday and suffered a 5-0 loss but returned home on Saturday to take on Churchill County and ended the regular season with a 2-2 tie against the Greenwave.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team wrapped up its short spring regular season with a split of two matches last week. The Buckaroos were looking to avenge an earlier loss to Elko, when they hosted the Indians on Wednesday, March 30.
The Lowry High School volleyball team finished its shortened spring regular season with losses to Elko and Churchill County this past weekend. Lowry traveled to Elko on Friday night and the Indians swept the Lady Bucks 25-13, 25-13 and 25-19. Lowry played its home finale on Saturday afternoon and was looking for a season-sweep of Churchill County. However, the Greenwave won in four sets 25-18, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-16. The Lady Bucks ended the regular season at 1-9 in the 3A East. Churchill County scored four of the first six points of the opening set, only to see Lowry roar back with a 6-2 run to lead 8-6. The shifts of momentum continued, as the Greenwave reeled off the next six points to go back in front 12-8.
For the first time this season, the Lowry High School girls golf team did not find itself atop the 3A East standings. The Lady Bucks traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday, March 30, and finished third, recording a season-high score of 470. The scores were the highest of the year, with Elko winning with a team total of 444. Spring Creek was second at 453 and Churchill County (497) was fourth. Dayton and Fernley did not compete in the tournament.
It was a much-different feeling to this year’s Lowry High School cross country home meet. The event is usually set for mid-October with hundreds of young elementary, middle school, and junior high runners before the main event, which features a handful of high schools.
It was a tale of two halves for the Lowry High School football team on Saturday afternoon, after making the short trip to Spring Creek. Coming off its first loss of the season, the Buckaroos led the entire first and by as many as 15 points at 23-8, only to see the Spartans come back in the fourth quarter to win 30-29.
After missing more than two years on the field in a competitive way, the McDermitt High School football team was looking to make the best of the shortened season this spring. The Bulldogs last played in 2018 and were about using this time in March to build the program for future years. McDermitt did not have any seniors on the roster and featured five freshmen.
The Lowry High School girls golf team held on to its run of winning four straight Eastern 3A tournaments, but had a partner join them atop the standings on Tuesday, March 23, in Fallon. Spring Creek tied Lowry for the top spot at Fallon Golf Course, with each school shooting 429. Elko was one shot back at 430 and Fernley (453) and Churchill County (477) rounded out the team scores. Dayton did not have enough players for a team total, with just two players.
