A well-timed loss may not be a bad thing and that is what happened to the Lowry High School softball team last week. The Lady Bucks, who have cruised through much of the 3A East season this spring, hit a major speed bump on Wednesday, May 12. Lowry took on Spring Creek, who is fifth in the league, in Winnemucca and suffered a 5-2 loss to the Spartans. It was the first win for Spring Creek over Lowry since 2011.
The Lowry High School swimming team was back in the pool on Friday, April 30, to take on Sparks in a dual. The Lady Bucks beat the Railroaders 45-37 and the Buckaroo boys cruised to a 77-38 victory.
The Lowry High School track and field team was in Fallon for a tri-meet with Churchill County and Fernley and brought home a number of first-place finishes. Jovi Kuskie picked a pair of wins in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters. The junior set a personal-best time of 2:35.90 in the 800 and 5:36.07 in the 1,600 meters.
Carole Doughty shot a low-net score of 79 wo win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club accuracy tournament held Tuesday, May 4, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The best scores of the year for the 3A boys golfers took place on Tuesday, April 4, in Fernley. Five of the six schools broke 400 on the day, with the Vaqueros shooting a season-best 348 to win on its home course. Elko was second at 352, while the Buckaroos were third with a season-best round of 355. Spring Creek (389), Churchill County (397) and Dayton 423 rounded out the team scores. Ferrnley’s Isaac O’Neill was the low medalist with a 2-over par round of 74. Elko’s Kaden Konakis and Lowry’s Cal Peters each shot 80, but Konakis was awarded second place on the scorecard tiebreaker. Spring Creek’s Kevin Thompson was fourth overall at 82 and Lowry freshman Landon Esquivel carded a career-best 86 to place fifth in the individual standings.
The McDermitt High School track and field team was in Battle Mountain this past Friday for the Battle Mountain Invitational. Braeden Ramsey set a personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.63 seconds and the junior ran the 800 meters in 2:42.5. Fellow junior Lane Barrett ran the 100-meter dash at 14.91 and the 200 meters in a time of 34.65.
After picking up two wins against the top team in the league on the road the week before, the Lowry High School dropped three games to Fernley this past week to drop to 4-8 on the season. Lowry traveled to Fernley on Wednesday, May 5, and suffered a 10-0 loss to the Vaqueros. The Buckaroos used a double from Garette Hinshaw and a single by Marcus Montes to start the top of the second, but the rally ended there as the next three batters were retired. Fernley took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Kyle Jones RBI-double.
It was built as a battle for the top spot in the 3A East, but the Lowry High School softball team made it look easy with a three-game sweep of Fernley, outscoring the Vaqueros 39-8 in three games to improve to 11-1 overall.
The Pershing County softball team hosted Battle Mountain on Tuesday, April 27. The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead with five runs in each of the first two innings. The Mustangs waited until the fourth inning to put their four runs on the board. From there, it was all Battle Mountain. The game ended at 16-4 with the Mustangs losing.
The McDermitt High School track and field team was in Elko this past Friday for the Ward Coates Invite. McDermitt senior Takayla Antonio was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 26 feet, 3 inches. In addition, she threw the discus 50-6.5. Sophomore Cayla Crutcher was 11th in the shot put at 25-2.5 and 18th in the discus (62-5. Freshman Nicolette Northrup placed 14th in the shot put with a toss of 23-4 and she was 23rd in the discus at 44-1.
It appears the 3A East boys championship this year is a toss up between the six schools every week. After winning in Fallon, the Lowry High School boys placed fourth this past Thursday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline. Beautiful weather greeted the golfers on one of the best courses in Nevada.
The Lowry High School track and field team came away with five first-place finishes at its home meet that took place this past Saturday. Spring Creek and Churchill County also made the trip to Winnemucca. Jovi Kuskie led the way in the 1,600 meters, as the junior bested the rest of the field with a time of 5 minutes, 39.18 seconds. She was third in the 300-meter hurdles at 50.46.
The Lowry High School softball team isn't showing signs of letting up on offense, scoring 53 runs this past weekend in a three-game sweep of Dayton. The Lady Bucks won the opening game of the series on Wednesday, April 28, 18-3 and went back to Dayton this past Saturday and won both games 18-2 and 17-3 to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Lynda Walton shot a low-gross score of 86 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Criers tournament on Tuesday, April 20, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The Lowry High School swim team opened its season on Saturday, April 17, in Carson City with three duals against Hug, North Valleys and Damonte Ranch. The Lowry girls beat Hug 43-33, lost to North Valleys 55-43 and lost 212-26 to Damonte Ranch. The Buckaroo boys knocked off Hug 43-24 and lost 57-37 to North Valleys and 72-38 to Damonte Ranch.
