The Winnemucca Junior All-Stars traveled to Fernley this past weekend for the District 3 Tournament. Winnemucca opened the tournament on Saturday morning against Silverada (Dayton) and lost 11-4. Winnemucca was eliminated from the tournament on Sunday with a 9-7 loss to Walker River (Yerington). Ruby Mountain (Spring Creek) beat Silverada 13-0 for the championship on Monday morning.
Nevada Football has continued to rack up the preseason honors ahead of the 2021 campaign, landing a total of 33 selections, including 15 to the first teams, on the Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus (PFF) Preseason All-Mountain West Teams. The Pack’s 15 selections to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Mountain West Team shared the conference lead with Boise State and San Jose State, but its eight first-team selections far out-paced the field, being twice that of the next-best program (Fresno State, with four). On the PFF teams, Nevada led the way in both overall selections (19) and first-team nods (seven).
Former champion Zach Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus before getting on a charter flight to the British Open, forcing him to join the growing list of withdrawals and ending his streak at playing 69 consecutive majors. The R&A said Johnson, who played in the John Deere Classic in Illinois on Sunday, and local qualifier Louis de Jager of South Africa had positive COVID-19 tests and withdrew.

The Silver State International Rodeo concluded last week in Winnemucca after a weeks worth of performance for high school and junior high contestants. Contestants who finished fifth through 25th in an event during the season was eligible to compete in Winnemucca. Contestants as far away as Oklahoma made the trip to Nevada. Up next is the season finale and the National High School Finals Rodeo in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 18-24.

The Winnemucca Little League Junior All-Star team will travel to Fernley for the District 3 Tournament. Action gets under way on Friday as White Pine takes on Silverada at 3:30 p.m. Winnemucca will play the winner of that game on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The Winnemucca 10-12 year-old All-Stars traveled to Elko for the District 3 tournament that began this past Saturday. Winnemucca opened play on Saturday night and was defeated by White Pine. Winnemucca knocked off the Elko Maroon 16-6 on Sunday and took on Ruby Mountain on Monday. Results from the game were not available at press time.
The Winnemucca Junior Golf season began on Wednesday, June 30, with the Emelie Dillon Memorial scramble. After the nine-hole tournament was, finished, three teams tied for first with scores of 33.
The seeds for this were planted nearly a year ago. The Phoenix Suns were in the middle of their eight-game unbeaten run inside the bubble at Walt Disney World last summer when someone asked coach Monty Williams if it was fun to be the feel-good story of the event. His answer was telling.
