The Winnemucca 8-10 year-old stars were in Spring Creek for the District 3 Tournament, along with Ruby Mountain, Silverada, Walker River, Elko and White Pine. Winnemucca opened play on Saturday morning and suffered a 12-2 loss to Ruby Mountain. Winnemucca took on Walker River on Sunday and was eliminated from the tournament with a 13-12 loss.
Matti DeLong and Brynn Barto of the Humboldt County Rodeo Club were in Des Moines, Iowa, last week for the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. More than 1,00 contestants from around the United States took part in the week-long event. Delong and partner Jace Harry of Nixon were the Nevada state champions in ribbon roping. At the national finals, the duo was 10th in their go-around in a time of 13.11 seconds and 49th in the first performance. DeLong and Harry improved to a time of 9.57 in the second go-around and were 24th in the second performance.
Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to The Sporting News’ “Top 25 QBs of 2021” list, checking in at No. 15. Strong, the only Mountain West quarterback to make the list, is coming off a 2020 campaign in which he was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and to its First Team.
The Winnemucca Little League 10-12 year-old, All-Star team will travel to Elko for the District 3 Tournament. Action gets under way on Saturday with four games.
The Holiday Bowl will move downtown to Petco Park after its home of 42 years, Qualcomm Stadium, was razed. Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville confirmed the move. He and officials from the San Diego Padres will unveil renderings of how the ballpark will accommodate a football field. No date has been set for the 2021 game, which will be the first in a new five-year contract between the Pac-12 and ACC. Neville began looking at Petco Park as an option since it became apparent that Qualcomm Stadium’s lifespan was coming to an end after the NFL’s Chargers moved to Los Angeles following the 2016 season.

The Winnemucca Regional Raceway hosted two nights of the High Desert Classic Shootout, featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Northern SportMod, IMCA Sport Compact, Hobby Stocks, Pure Stocks and Mini Modifieds. Racing returns on Friday night with the Ty Scott Memorial Race.
Serena Williams said she will not go to the Tokyo Olympics, but did not want to say why during her pre-Wimbledon video conference with reporters Sunday. “I’m actually not on the Olympic list. ... Not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be on it,” Williams said. The 39-year-old Williams has won four gold medals at past Summer Games for the United States: in both singles and doubles at the 2012 London Olympics — which held the tennis competition at the All England Club — and in doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics. All of her doubles golds were won with her older sister, Venus, as her partner.
Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 96 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club gross-net tournament held Tuesday, June 22 at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
When the dust settled on the 2021 Reno Rodeo, there were some very happy rodeo contestants heading out of town. The rodeo marks the start of the busy summer rodeo season and winning here gives contestants momentum as they head into “Cowboy Christmas,” which includes all of the rodeos held over the Fourth-of-July Holiday.
Young wrestlers from the area got a chance to refine their skills last week, as Jace Billingsley put on the Up From the Mucc wrestling camp that featured the head coach from Eastern Oregon University and a handful of his wrestlers to help out over the three-day camp. Area coaches and parents also jumped in to help make the cam successful.
Lowry High School has filled two opening in its girls sports programs. Jesse Zamudio will take over as the Lowry varsity girls basketball coach. He replaces Melanie Thurmond, who is going back to Michigan to teach.
Lynda Walton shot a low gross score of 46 to win the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club best nine tournament held Tuesday, June 15, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Just a couple months after finishing a six-game spring football season, the Lowry High School football team was back on the field for six days at the beginning of June to prepare for the upcoming fall season that is just right around the corner. The official start of the high school football season is Aug. 2. Lowry opens the season on Friday, Aug. 20 at home against Douglas.
