Nevada athletics has single-game tickets for all six football home games on sale at www.mynevadatickets.com. The Winnemucca Event Center has been a busy place the last couple weeks, as nearly 750 competitors from around the nation are competing in the 2021 World Horseshoe Pitching Championships. Opening ceremonies were held on Monday, July 19. Pitchers compete in different divisions in a three-day competition and come back the final week for the championships. The origin of this sport goes back to the days of the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers pitched horseshoes discarded from the horses used to drive their chariots. Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War pitched horseshoes for recreation on the Boston Common. The Duke of Wellington in history said that the war was won by the pitchers of the steel (horseshoes).
The high school rodeo season came to a close on Saturday night as the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded its week stay at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb. A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain club members took part in the event. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong competed in three events. He finished 29th in the nation with 275 points. In his first performance, he scored 137 points, which was good enough for sixth and 37th in the first go-around.
Terri Kracaw shot a low-gross score of 43 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Nine-Hole Eclectic tournament held Tuesday, July 20, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Three Nevada players were named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List Thursday morning, as wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks, and tight end Cole Turner were tabbed candidates for college football’s award for top receiver. The three candidates for the Wolf Pack led all schools in the country on the list, and continues a first week of watch list reveals which has featured plenty of Nevada presence.
The Winnemucca Junior Golf season came to a close on Wednesday, July 21, as Angelo Bidart shot a score of 81 to win the Jeff Wade Memorial junior golf tournament.
On July 4 and 5, cowboys and cowgirls gathered to compete at the 108th annual McDermitt Ranch Rodeo.
With the youth football season just around the corner, youngsters from around the area took part in the Up From the Mucc football camp last week at Lowry High School. The camp was broken in to two days, with ages 8-10 going one day and 11-13 on the final day. The campers learned the fundamentals of the game, along with fun games thrown in.
It was a busy weekend at the Good Times Drag Strip off Jungo Road with two days of racing. Friday night featured a test and tune and Jackpot race. Saturday was a doubleheader day for the junior dragsters, pro division and sportsman/street division. The King of the Hill bracket capped off the weekend of racing. Orovada’s Don Mertens won the King of the Hill and Hal Lockett was second. Mertens also won the Sportsman class and Fausto Banuelos was second. Lockett won the Pro class and Darrel Cramer was the runner-up. In the Jackpot race, Jason Arrien claimed the top spot and Mike Dodd was second.

In a year of firsts in the majors, Collin Morikawa might have topped them all. His performance over four days at the British Open was unlike anything seen at Royal St. George’s, even in such ideal weather for the English coast. In his first real test of links golf, Morikawa didn’t make a bogey over his final 31 holes, blowing past mistake-prone Louis Oosthuizen and never flinching as Jordan Spieth made one last charge late Sunday afternoon.
