With smoke in the northern Nevada air, the Lowry High School cross country team got back to normal racing for the first time in nearly two years. The Buckaroos traveled to Minden on Friday for the Douglas Class Races. The event breaks up the runners into freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior races and is just 2.55 miles, a bit shorter than the normal 5K or 3.1-mile race.
Asami Morita has been named assistant coach for the Nevada women’s basketball program, head coach Amanda Levens announced Monday. In her seven seasons at Robert Morris, the Colonials made five Northeast Conference Championship Games, winning titles in 2016, 2017, and 2019. RMU went 133-78 (.630) since 2014-15 and notched 91 wins in league play.
Gail Piquet shot a low-net score of 69 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club accuracy tournament held Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Friends with Benefits out of the Reno and Carson City area won the 2021 Winners Inn Shootout bowling tournament held Aug. 7-8 at Spare Time Bowl in Winnemucca. The Winners Inn provided $3,800 in prize money, as nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 96 of them from out of town. Over $13,000 in prize money was awarded as 36 teams competed.
Drag racers from around the area were back at the Good Times Drag Strip this past weekend for the Northern Nevada Racing Association Awesome August races. Test and tune and Jackpot races were held Friday night and drivers in the Pro and Sportsman/Street classes battled it out for bragging rights on Saturday night. John Swartz won the Jackpot race on Friday and Steve Wasinger was second. On Saturday, Joe Gourley took the top spot in the Pro class and Jason Arrien was second. Don Mertens won the Sportsman class and Ryan Andrews was the runner-up.
This past weekend was the first chance for high school sports teams to scrimmage against other squads and the Lowry High School football team was in Battle Mountain on Saturday. Pershing County also made the trip to Battle Mountain. The Buckaroo football teams will host Douglas on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the Lowry cheerleaders and dance team to perform as well. The Lowry varsity volleyball team will be in Yerington on Friday and Saturday for the Yerington Invitational and the freshman and JV volleyball teams travel to Truckee. The Lowry cross country team travels to Minden on Friday for the Douglas Class Races.
Unlike a year ago, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association is set to begin its sports season on time, with all the sports playing this year. The basketball and wrestling season was completely wiped out in 2020-21 and fall sports played in March and April of 2021. Well, fall sports is back in their regular spot on the calendar and the season is now under way. This past Friday, interim executive director of the NIAA, Donnie Nelson, held a video call outlining some of the regulations that will be in place for the upcoming season.
Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to his fourth preseason watch list of the summer, being tabbed a candidate for the Manning Award. Ahead of the 2021 campaign, Strong has already been named a candidate for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy.

It was a quick summer for high school athletes, as the 2021 fall sports season is under way in Nevada. Football teams throughout the state started practice on Monday, Aug. 2, while the remainder of the sports (girls and boys soccer, girls and boys cross country, girls golf and volleyball) started their season this past Saturday. The first official games can start on Aug. 20.
The two-week stay for the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the World Horseshoe Pitching Championships concluded this past Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center.

After a year’s absence of junior high school sports, the Winnemucca Junior High School girls basketball team has begun open gyms for the upcoming season.
Last week, the Lowry High School girls basketball team held three specialized camps for grades 1-7. The Little Buckaroo camp was designed to teach the fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, defense, rebounding and game play. The post and guard camps had players separated to learn 1-on-1 moves specific to their positions. First-year Lowry girls coach Jesse Zamudio and JV coach Maite Hernandez ran the camp long with current Lowry girls basketball players.
Drivers from around the Northern Nevada area made their way to Winnemucca this past weekend for two days of dirt-track racing. Friday night's action was cut short just before the start of the main events. The heat races were completed, but a rain storm hit during intermission and wiped the rest of the night out. Racers returned Saturday afternoon to complete the Friday main events and Saturday's action took place as well. Winnemucca Regional Raceway will hold races on Aug. 27-28.
