After dominating the Northern 3A for a decade from 2000-09, the Lowry High School cross country has not been able to duplicate those results in the years after that incredible run of winning 17 out of 20 state championships. However, it was a bright moment for the Buckaroos this past Friday at Shadow Mountain Park near Reed High School in Sparks at the Northern 3A Regional Championships.
The Lowry High School girls soccer team completed its season last week with a pair of matches against Elko County foes. Lowry hosted Northern 3A East regular season East champion Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 26, with Spring Creek winning 5-1. The Spartans jumped on the board in the 24th minute, as Jacey Lindquist got through the Lowry defense and got off a shot from close range for the 1-0 lead. Spring Creek added to its lead in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick by Shyann Lamb.
As the Lowry High School boys soccer team traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 26, to conclude the regular season, the Buckaroos knew exactly where it would be next week and what playoff spot had been earned. Lowry will be the No. 2 seed from the Northern 3A East for the Northern 3A Regional Championships that will be played in Winnemucca from Nov. 4-6. Meanwhile, Spring Creek still had playoff hopes with an upset win or tie against the Buckaroos.
Fallon may be saving the best for last after dominating their second straight opponent to secure a berth in the postseason football playoffs. It took the first half for the Greenwave to warm up on a chilly and windy fall night, but Fallon scored five touchdowns in the second half on Friday in its homecoming game to end the regular Northern 3A-East season with a 49-14 win over Lowry at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex. Fallon, 3-3 in league and 5-3 overall, will host Sparks at 6 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Northern 3A playoffs. Only the top three teams from the West and East divisions moves on in the postseason.
The Lowry High School volleyball team did its best to turn the standings upside down atop the Northern 3A this past weekend. The Lady Bucks were in Lyon County to take on Fernley and Dayton, who were first and second in the standings and already had beaten the Lady Bucks this year in Winnemucca.
The Lowry High School girls soccer team saw their playoff chances take a hit after suffering a pair of losses on the road this past weekend. Lowry traveled to Dayton on Friday afternoon and lost 2-0 to the Dust Devils. After a scoreless first half, Dayton netted two goals in the final 40 minutes to complete the season sweep of Lowry.
The Lowry High School cross country team split up for the final week of the regular season with a pair of meets. Freshman Natalee Formby was the lone Buckaroo runner at the Northeast Nevada Championships in Spring Creek on Thursday, Oct. 21. Formby was third in the girls race with a time of 24 minutes, 5.63 seconds, missing out on second by .17 seconds in a photo finish. It was also a personal-best time for the freshman.
After going through a shortened season with no playoffs, the Lowry High School boys soccer team is back in the postseason and will enjoy the home turf of the Northern 3A Regional Championship in the first weekend of November. Lowry was busy last week with three home matches in five days, winning two of those and tying another. “It’s good to be back in the playoffs,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “Everyone missed last year, but we have been on a good little run. The boys have been playing well.”
The McDermitt High School volleyball team was back on its home floor, as the Bulldogs celebrated their Homecoming last week. McDermitt gave Owyhee everything it could handle, but suffered a three-set defeat 26-24, 25-8 and 25-17. Owyhee scored the first four points of the opening set, but McDermitt struck back with five straight points to take the lead. Taylor Killsback had two aces and a kill by Cayla Crutcher.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action in Elko on Oct. 8-10. And once again local clubs shined at the competition. Emma Garijo turned a strong performance for the Humboldt County Rodeo Club, winning the barrel racing average with a combined time of 31.646 seconds. She won the first performance at 15.873 and was third in the second performance in a time of 15.773. Garijo also earned all-around cowgirl honors. In addition, Garijo led the way in pole bending with an average time of 42.345.
Sherfield voted Player of the Year; Pack picked 3rd
The NIAA State Championships are set as the showcase to end the season for each sport, but that was not the case for the NIAA 3A State Girls State Championships last week in Mesquite. Before the tournament, the schools were informed that the opening day would be shortened to nine holes, due to getting on the Oasis Golf Course late, as the last group teed off at 2:36 p.m.
Carson Strong passed for 395 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns and Nevada pulled away after halftime to beat Hawaii 34-17 in Mountain West Conference play on Saturday.
After dropping its second league of the season during Homecoming week to Fernley, the Lowry High School football team put itself in a position where it would need to win its final two games of the year to get into the postseason. As Fernley spoiled Lowry’s Homecoming, the Buckaroos did the same to Spring Creek this past Friday, 38-19 to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northern 3A East.
