Strike Zone Pro Shop wins 2021 Sandy McLinden Memorial Tournament

Strike Zone Pro Shop out of the Reno/Carson City area won the 2021 Sandy McLinden Memorial Tournament held Oct. 6-7 at Spare Time Bowl.  The Winners Inn provided $3,800 in prize money, as 36 teams nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 96 of them from out of town. Over $13,000 in prize money was awarded. 

Lowry volleyball 3A academic state champs

The Lowry High School volleyball team was named the NIAA 3A Academic State Champions at this past weekend’s state championships. The Lady Bucks had a GPA of 3.74. Smith Valley (1A, 392), Lincoln County (2A, 3.76), S.E.C.T.A, (3.69) and Bishop Manogue (5A, 3.79) were the other academic state champions.  

AP Top 25 Takeaways: Oklahoma loss boosts Cincinnati’s hopes

The College Football Playoff selection committee’s assessment of Oklahoma ended up looking spot on. The number of unbeaten teams in major college football dropped to three after the Sooners were manhandled by No. 18 Baylor, one of two victories Saturday for remaining Big 12 teams over Southeastern Conference-bound flagship schools. No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Cincinnati and No. 15 UTSA have not lost yet.

Talton named Lou Groza Award semifinalist

For the third time in his career, Nevada junior Brandon Talton has been named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced recently. Talton is one of 20 semifinalists, and one of five from the Mountain West, who was included on the list for the 2021 award, which is given annually to the nation’s top place-kicker.

Carson Strong in Top 10 for Unitas Golden Arm Award

Nevada quarterback Carson Strong was named to The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Top 10 as announced by the organization. Strong is the only quarterback from the Mountain West Conference in the Top 10.  The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation and presenting partner, A. O. Smith, announce the Top 10 candidates for this year’s Golden Arm Award. 

Arroyo gets first win with UNLV, Williams sets rushing mark

Cameron Friel threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns, Charles Williams became UNLV’s all-time leading rusher, and the Rebels beat New Mexico 31-17 on Saturday night for coach Marcus Arroyo’s first victory with the program.

Talton’s late FG lifts Nevada over San Jose State 27-24

Brandon Talton kicked a 45-yard field goal with :03 seconds left in the game and Nevada used two defensive touchdowns to fend off San Jose State 27-24 in Mountain West Conference play on Saturday. Nevada (7-2, 4-1) got on the scoreboard first when Jordan Lee caused a Tyler Nevens fumble that was picked up by Daiyan Henley and returned 55 yards for a touchdown. 

Wolf Pack announces proof of vaccination process for basketball games

University of Nevada athletics has announced a partnership with Fobi’s CheckVax to assist with proof of vaccination at men’s and women’s basketball games during the 2021-22 season, which began with Tuesday’s men’s home opener against Eastern Washington, and Wednesday’s women’s home opener against Saint Mary’s.

Kuskie qualifies for NAIA National Cross Country Championships

Bushnell University junior Rebecca Kuskie earned All-Conference honors on Friday as she took fifth-place at the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships, taking place at Running Y Ranch.  Kuskie crossed the finish line in 19:31.90 and earned an automatic selection for the NAIA National Championship as she was one of the highest individual runners from a team that will not qualify for the final race.

McDermitt volleyball team knocked off by Owyhee in regional tournament

The McDermitt High School volleyball team was in Elko this past Saturday for the Northern 1A East Regional Championships. McDermitt took on No. 3 seed Owyhee and was defeated in three sets 25-10, 25-14 and 25-13 and saw its season come to an end.

Lowry boys defeated by South Tahoe in regional playoffs

After having no postseason tournament last year due to the pandemic, the Lowry High School boys soccer team had the opportunity to host the Northern 3A Regional Championship this past weekend.

Kuskie wins NIAA 3A State Cross Country championship

The last time the Lowry High School girls cross country team won an individual state championship title, Jovi Kuskie was just two years old. That all changed this past Saturday at Reed High School and Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, when Kuskie, a Lowry senior, claimed the individual state championship as the lone Lady Buckaroo runner on the day.

Lowry spilts with Spring Elko but see playoff hopes fall short

For most of the year, the Northern 3A volleyball league looked like a hot mess with the possibility of any team beating another on any given night. Fernley ended up pulling away at the end of the season to win the league at 8-2, but it was one of the Vaqueros’ losses that ended up knocking Lowry High School out of the regional championships.
