National High School Finals Rodeo starts Sunday in Wyoming

The National High School Finals Rodeo begins Sunday in Gilette, Wyo., and concludes on June 22. A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain cowboys and cowgirls will be competing.

38th annual Silver State International Rodeo rolls into Winnemucca

The Winnemucca Events Complex was a busy place once again, as the 38th annual Silver State International Rodeo rolled into town for a week. Some of the best high school and junior high school rodeo athletes from around the West and Canada competed in a number events. The top-15 finals were held on Thursday, July 6.

Battle Mountain to host Little League Softball State Tournament

Battle Mountain will be hosting the 2023 Nevada Little League State Softball Tournament beginning Thursday at the fields by Elanor Leamire Junior High School.

Lowry volleyball team holds summer camp

Lowry High School held its youth summer camp and high school skills camp last week at the high school. The skills camp for 11-year-olds to freshmen was used for beginner and intermediate athletes. The skills camp was used for high school athletes. Tryouts for the Lowry volleyball season will be in early August.

Little League all-stars compete in Elko

The Winnemucca and Battle Mountain Little League baseball all-stars were in Elko last week for the District 3 Tournament.

Lowry boys/girls basketball team holds youth camp

Youngsters from the third through eighth grade attended the Lowry High School youth boys and girls basketball camp last week. The camp was taught by Lowry coaches and players and focused on drills and enthusiasm to help the players increase their basketball fundamentals and overall knowledge of the game. In addition, the goal is learn and enjoy the game within the Lowry tradition.

Eight Lowry softball players collect all-league, all-state honors

A number of Lowry High School softball players earned all-league and all-state honors for their play this spring. The Lady Bucks reached the state championship game in Mesquite, losing 9-3 to North Valleys and finished the year at 27-10.

Lowry football team finishes off two weeks of spring practice

The school year may be ending but the Lowry High School football team is getting ready for the 2023 season with two weeks of spring practice. The Buckaroos will have summer workouts and start the new season at the end of July. Lowry opens the 2023 schedule at Columbia (Nampa, Idaho) on Aug. 18 and another road trip to Hug on Aug. 25. The home debut is set for Sept. 8 against Sparks.

Huntley Byrd wins state title in junior high pole bending

Humboldt County’s Huntley Byrd earned the pole bending state championship this season in the junior high division of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association. She will be headed to the National Junior High School Rodeo Finals in Perry, Ga., from June 18-24 in three events.

Billy DeLong earns all-around cowboy honors, wins two state titles on home turf in Winnemucca

The Humboldt County Rodeo Club took home a couple state championships, as the club hosted the Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca from May 25-29 at the Winnemucca Event Center. Billy DeLong ran away with the all-around cowboy honors for the year and was the state champion in saddle bronc, steer wrestling, the reserve champion in boys cutting and was fourth in steer wrestling.
