Lowry football opens 2023 with preseason practice

The high school sports season is underway across Nevada, and the Lowry High School football team is no exception, taking to the field a week earlier than other sports. Lowry opens the season with a freshman game in Winnemucca on Thursday, Aug. 17, against Spanish Springs. The JV and varsity teams travel to Nampa, Idaho, on Friday, Aug. 18 to play Columbia. The JV and varsity make their home debut on Thursday, Sept. 7 against Sparks in the new-look Northern 3A.

Humboldt Softball League holds 2023 end of the year tournament

The Humboldt Softball League held its end of the year tournament on Friday night and early Saturday morning at the Winnemucca Sports Complex. Ten teams began the night, with the champion getting crowned in the early morning hours on Saturday.

Maddux Nichols claimed the top spot in the annual Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament on Wednesday, July 26, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course with a round of 74.

Good Times Drag Strip holds July Jamboree

It was a busy weekend at the Good Times Drag Strip off Jungo Road with two days of racing. Friday night featured a test and tune and Jackpot race. Saturday was a full day of racing for the pro division and sportsman/street division. The King of the Hill bracket capped off the weekend of racing. Daniel Schierholt won the 2023 King of the Hill race. On Friday night, Joe Gourley won the Jackpot race and Randy Betschart was second. On Saturday, Don Mertens won the Sportsman Class, beating out Phil Sabatino. In the Pro Class, Phil Duerr won and Mason Marlin placed second.

Winnemucca all-stars play in state tournament

Winnemucca was the host to the 2023 Nevada State Little League Baseball State Tournament. Three divisions of baseball took place with the 8-10-year-old, 9-11 and 10-12-year-old Division. Winnemucca played in the 9-11-year-old division and took on Paseo Verde from Las Vegas and Centennial from Sparks. Winnemucca dropped both games in the tournament.
