Stannard wins Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament

Trevor Stannard shot a 6-over par 78 to win the Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament last Wednesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Fifty-four junior golfers took part in the annual event.

Spike Frog Volleyball hosts camp for junior high, high school students

The Lowry High School gym was full of junior high and high school girls last weekend as part of the Spike Frog Volleyball camp. Spike Frog is a private volleyball skills instruction operated by Josh Taylor and Ashley Taylor. The duo were in town to instruct the three-day camp. The camp teaches core skills in passing and serving. Once those fundamentals are achieved, campers move on to spiking, setting, individual defense and blocking. The camp also gives video analysis, private group lessons and a college recruitment seminar upon request.

Winnemucca Gold Rush 8 and under squad finishes second at state tourney

The Winnemucca Gold Rush 8u softball team placed second at the Nevada State Championship over the weekend of July 9-12 in Carson City. The successful season included playing in five tournaments and making it to the championship game in four of the five tournaments across northern Nevada and California. The team ended with an overall record of 17-14. During the state championship, the girls played seven games. The weekend started off slow with a 1-1 record in pool play and a loss in the first game of bracket play. With their backs against the wall, the girls fought back to win three straight games in the loser’s bracket to make it to the championship game. The season ended as they fell short to the Fernley Dynomites 4-1 in the championship game.

Trevor Stannard won the Doug Maddox memorial junior golf tournament held Wednesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course with a 6-over par 78. More than 40 junior golfers competed in the tournament.

The first go-around of the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded on Wednesday morning in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Winnemucca All-Stars split games with Ruby Mountain, Elko

The Winnemucca 13-14 Little League Junior All-Stars split its first two games in the District 3 Tournament in Fernley. Winnemucca opened with Ruby Mountain (Spring Creek) on Saturday afternoon and lost 16-2 in five innings. Winnemucca faced Elko on Sunday night and won 12-7. Winnemucca played High Desert (Fernley) on Monday night and results were not available at press time. If Winnemucca wins they will play the loser of Ruby Mountain and Walker River tonight at 5:30 p.m.
