Lowry and McDermitt start winter sports seasons

Winter is here and it is time to play some basketball and wrestle.  Lowry High School will field a varsity wrestling squad of 29 comprised of freshmen through  seniors.  Lowry first tournament of the year will be Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at Churchill County High School, before returning to the Winnemucca Events Complex on Dec. 6- 8.

Warriors reign supreme

The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team  won all three of its games and the eighth-graders won its only contest at Winnemucca Junior High School on Saturday, Nov. 17, in their only home games of the season.  The eighth-grade squad beat Pershing County Middle School (Lovelock) 41-3, after winning by 20 in Reno against Clayton Middle School on Thursday. 

Winter sports get going

The winter sports season is in full swing at Lowry High School, as practice for girls basketball, boys basketball and wrestling has begun. There will be no Thanksgiving break for the Lowry boys basketball team, who hosts Reed on Friday, Nov. 23, and Lowry travels to Reno on Saturday, Nov. 24.

WJHS boys basketball continues strong season

The Winnemucca Junior High School boys basketball teams hit the road last weekend and racked up more wins before returning for their only home stand of the season.  The eighth grade squad secured four more wins.

Cowan nabs power lifting championship in Reno in first competitive competition

Winnemucca personal trainer Erica Cowan travelled to Reno on Nov. 3 to compete in the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) American Iron Championship. 

Local swimmers represent at state finals in Henderson

Ten local kids swam against their peers in Henderson from Nov. 9-12 in the Nevada State Short Course Championship. Last year only four swimmers qualified for this event.

Veterans Day Grand Slam softball tourney hits Winnemucca

The Winnemucca Lions Club sponsored the second annual Veterans Day Grand Slam Softball Tournament at the softball complex last weekend.  Six teams from Winnemucca, Elko and Reno went head-to-head in a two-day shootout that found Winnemucca’s Hansen Street team as the champion. They defeated Winnemucca’s Beerly Legal team in the finale, and Elko’s E-Town squad took third. 

WYFL hosts Battle Born Classic

The rookies, the juniors and the seniors of the Winnemucca Youth Football League all made it to the finals in last weekend’s Third Annual Battle Born Football Classic.  The Winnemucca Seniors defeated the Elko Seminoles 18-14 in the final game of the tournament to win the title for the second year in a row. 

WJHS basketball back in action

The Winnemucca Junior High School basketball teams traveled to participate in a couple of tournaments last weekend.  On Friday, Nov. 2, the Warriors took on teams in Carson and Saturday, Nov. 3, they went to Fernley.

Martin twins named to Wooden Award watch list

University of Nevada seniors Caleb Martin and Cody Martin have been named to the Wooden Award watch list.   The award honors the Division I player of the year.  Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the most prestigious honors in college basketball, the Wooden Award All American Team™ and Most Outstanding Player Award.

Ladies Golf Club results

Vicki Celio was the low net winner with a 71 at the President's Cup Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Gail Piquet had the fewest putts of the day with 29.

Nevada wins season opener

After an ankle injury last week, Nevada forward Jordan Caroline sat out a week of practices before playing in No. 7 Nevada's season opener.

Eastman steps downs as Lowry volleyball coach

After three years as the Lowry High School varsity volleyball coach, Brandon Eastman has stepped down to pursue other opportunities. “It was a difficult decision,” Eastman said. “I have known for a long time that I wanted to eventually go and get my Masters Degree, so I am planning to leave Winnemucca next fall and do that. It just seems like the right time, like I was ready to leave and go see what else is out there. It isn’t that I didn’t like coaching anymore; I have professional and educational goals that I want to pursue.”

Lady Bucks JV soccer team take on WJHS all-stars

The Lowry High School girls JV soccer squad had one final hurrah on Monday night, when they played an all-star team from Winnemucca Junior High School. 

Buckaroos' season ends with loss to Wolverines in regional playoffs

The Lowry High School football team traveled to Truckee this past Saturday to see if it could continue its surprising season.  Standing in the way of Lowry was perennial power Truckee. The Wolverines finished second in the Northern 3A and already owned a 27-10 over the Buckaroos.
