First-year Lowry High School girls varsity basketball coach Melanie Thurmond seems to be on the right track to bring the girls along this season. The Lady Bucks played their first game of the season against the Spanish Springs Cougars at the Winter Challenge Tournament in Reno on Friday, Nov. 29 and lost 68-52.
The McDermitt High School (MHS) girls basketball squad went to Oregon last Monday to take on Jordan Valley High School in their annual “Border War” game.
The Lowry High School wrestling squad traveled to Fallon for the Earl Wilkens Memorial Tournament on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1. The Buckaroos took down Elko, Wells, Wooster, Douglas, Churchill County (Fallon), and Carson. Their only loss came against Spanish Springs. Spanish Springs is the defending 4A state champion.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team went to Reno to compete in the Winter JV Invitational on Nov. 29 thru Dec. 1 and lost all three of their games. “Our first game was our best game; we played the Fallon JV team,” McDermitt High School boys basketball coach Jack Smith said.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team started its season strong last weekend, and they had a few adventures along the way. “We had a good start to the season with three games and three wins,” said MHS girls basketball coach Jaimi Wilkinson.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team turned its slow start into two big wins over the competition last weekend at the Railroad Classic at Sparks High School . The Heritage Eagles from Littleton, Colo., took down the Buckaroos 58-39 on Thursday in their first game at the tournament. "We played OK, but we just could not score,” said Lowry coach Chad Peters.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 66-51 in a non-conference meeting against the Reno Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 24, in Reno. “We had a bad start in that game," said LHS coach Chad Peters. "We ended up down 16 points in the first quarter, but we played it pretty even the rest of the way. We tied them up in the fourth quarter, but we couldn’t finish.”
Lowry High School junior Sierra Maestrejuan was selected to the Northern 3A all-leage, second team as a middle blocker for the 2018 volleyball season. Lowry finished the year 5-13 in league play this year and 8-16 overall. Maestrejuan led the team with 13 digs per match in 2018.
Peterbilt Trucking won the 2018 Spare Time Bowl Fall Classic held Nov. 9-11 at Spare Time Bowl in Winnemucca. The Winnemucca Inn provided $2,400 in prize money and Winners Inn contributed $1,000. Nearly 110 bowlers, 88 of them from out of town, competed in the three-day tournament. More than $10,000 in prize money was awarded.
Lowry High School junior Anthony Cuevas was nominated to a first-team, all-league spot as a utility player in the Northern 3A boys soccer division for his performance in the 2018 season. Cuevas also made Second Team All-State. Buckaroo Alex Herrera was voted second-team, all-league.
Lowry High School quarterback Brendan Domire was voted to the first team at his position for the year in the 3A Northern Division, as voted on by the league's 10 coaches. Caleb Sanchez also made the first team on the defensive side as a linebacker.
Career saves leader Mariano Rivera and late pitcher Roy Halladay are among 20 new candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot for the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, joined by 15 holdovers headed by Edgar Martinez. Left-hander Andy Pettitte and infielders Todd Helton, Michael Young and Miguel Tejada also are among the newcomers on the ballot announced Monday.
The Northern 3A ‘A’ League selected its all-league and all-state soccer players last week and three Lowry girls were recognized. Lowry’s Hannah Growcock was selected as the second-team goaltender. Growcock had 305 saves on the year, averaging 16.9 saves a game.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, Lowry High School’s Will Kracaw traveled to Casa Grande, Ariz., to compete in the Nike Cross Regionals Southwest (NXR) at Grande Sports Academy.
