The McDermitt High School boys basketball team went to Wells last weekend and lost 74-56 in their first conference game of the season. The Bulldogs had a 1-14 record coming into the contest, with their only win coming against Round Mountain at the Comstock Classic. The Leopards brought a 7-8 overall record to the match.
The Winnemucca Junior High School will host open gyms starting on Monday, Jan. 14, from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. for the seventh graders and will rotate Monday –Wednesday at the same times through Jan. 23.
The final score may not provide an accurate story for Friday’s Northern 3A boys basketball game between Fallon and visiting Lowry. Although Fallon stopped the Buckaroos by 32 points, Lowry made Fallon scratch and claw for every point and battled Fallon continuously under the boards in their league game at the Elmo Dericco Gym. “They’re one of the bigger, best talented teams we’ve faced,” said Fallon coach Chelle Dalager. “They have good post players, probably the best we have seen so far.”
The home team won the Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational at Spring Creek High School last weekend. Spring Creek dominated, winning with 312 points over Minico, Idaho, who came in second at 180.5. Lowry finished a strong third with 162 points in the 28-team field.
The Lady Wave and Lowry met for the first time since last season’s state 3A championship game, but the result was the same. Fallon’s depth and pressure defense provided the Wave its firepower for the night in a 67-43 win at the Elmo Dericco Gym. The rivalry showcased two of the top teams from the Northern 3A who have a knack facing each other when the stakes are high. Fallon defeated Lowry in the 3A championship game in February, 60-45, and also rallied in the 3A softball title game in May for a 3-2 win.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball squad headed off to Idaho to take on the Rimrock Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 5, in a non-conference meeting. The Raiders brought a 9-0 overall record and a 4-0 conference record into the game.
With the calendar turning to 2019, the Lowry High School wrestling team is looking to put the finishing touches on the season as the state tournament nears. The Buckaroos will have the honor of hosting the NIAA State Wrestling Championships this year on Feb. 8-9 at the Winnemucca Event Center. More than 50 teams from around the state will converge to northern Nevada to decide the best wrestlers in the state in the 1A/2A, 3A and 4A..
The Lowry High School girls basketball team came back from its holiday break strong with a couple of convincing wins at Pat Hart Court last Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Lady Bucks polished off the Vikings from South Tahoe 59-25, and Saturday found the Lady Bucks punishing the Dayton Dust Devils 54-8.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team started a three game home stand at Pat Hart Court last Thursday against Carson City from the 4A division, and they sent the Senators back to the capitol with a 68-38 loss. “We scheduled this game against Carson as an ice-breaker to knock the edges off a little bit and square things up before we face South Tahoe on Friday,” head coach Chad Peters said after the game.
On Thursday, Dec. 27, the Lowry High School wrestling team joined 86 other teams in the Sierra Nevada Classic wrestling tournament to start the two-day event held at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball squad traveled to the Rail City Classic Tournament in Sparks last week and fell to the host Sparks Railroaders on Wednesday Dec. 26, starting the tournament on a sour note with a 59-26 loss.
The Lowry High School girls basketball team headed to Boise, Idaho, last weekend to compete in the Timberline Tournament Borah High School hosted the games and Lowry finished the year looking forward to better results.
Winnemucca native Gianni Giordano went to the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) nationals in Frostproof, Fla., recently and brought home his second consecutive title in the junior division.
Sierra Lutheran (Class 1A), North Tahoe (2A), Truckee (3A) and Bishop Gorman (4A) tallied the most points through the fall season in their respective classifications to take the early lead in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s annual Award of Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Citizenship competition.
Melanie Thurmond has been the Lowry High School girls varsity coach for about six months now. She moved to Winnemucca from Michigan almost four years ago to take a job as a Physical Therapist at Rehab Services. Thurmond played college basketball at Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan and she coached high school basketball in Michigan also prior to moving here.
