The 2019 Rural Basketball season began in Orovada on Saturday, Jan. 19, with handful of games in two divisions Kings River vs Paradise D1 Paradise earned the 16-15 victory. Cody Allen was the high-point scorer for Kings River, sinking three shots for a total of six points, while Wade Mori sank two shots for Kings River with an additional four free throws for a total of eight points. The Lowry High School girls varsity basketball team holds a 9-2 record in league play after taking out North Valleys 51-20 last Friday and Truckee on Saturday 59-50. “Friday’s game was good against North Valleys,” head coach Melanie Thurmond said. “I felt like we started off a little slow, but then we got into our groove and pulled away. Juli Garcia and Sydney Connors both had 12 points, and Sydney had five boards, four assists and two steals as well. Heather Hall scored eight points and grabbed five boards for us also.”
The Lowry wrestlers grappled in Spring Creek on Friday Jan. 25, and Saturday Jan. 26, against eight league opponents in an attempt to get ready for the upcoming regional championships. “We wrestled eight duals and went 6-2; we are getting better,” head coach John Brooks said. “We lost to Spring Creek. We had real high hopes of knocking them off. It kind of stung a little bit losing to them. We go out on our duals, and then they just kind of shuffle the cards again the next week and we go again.”
After dropping the ball in their first two games of the season back in November, the Lowry High School boys basketball team has turned it on now, winning both of their games last weekend to go to 9-2 in league play and 12-5 overall. On Friday, at North Valleys High School in Reno, the Buckaroos downed the Panthers in their own house 60-46.
The McDermitt boys varsity basketball team hosted the Eureka Vandals and took a tough loss this past Friday night. The Bulldogs were ahead 11-5 at the end of the first, but they lost their bite for a while after that, going down 20-13 at the half.
Years of hard work on the golf course paid dividends for Lowry High School senior Tatyana Carlson. The Buckaroos senior recently signed a letter of intent to play golf for Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. She will be joining a team that had success this past year. The Warriors were ranked 24th in the last fall NAIA Top 25 poll. “I did think it was possible to get where I am,” said Carlson. “I know I put myself out there, I worked hard for it. I was out on the golf course from day to night and I truly wanted it for myself.”
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team took home a resounding victory 46-28 against Eureka last Friday night in McDermitt. “I am just tickled that we beat Eureka,” MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson said. The Lady Bulldogs took a 9-7 lead in the first quarter, and spread it to 19-11 at the half.
The Lowry High School wrestling team ended its regular season in style by winning the Vaquero Invitational this past weekend in Fernley. The Buckaroos claimed their first tournament win of the season, scoring 235.50 points to beat Battle Mountain, who was second at 198.50. Fernley, the host, was third at 193.50 and Yerington (158.50) and Pershing County (145.50) rounded out the top five.
he Lowry High School boys basketball team returned home last weekend after taking a couple of tough losses on the road the week before. Pat Hart Court was just what the Bucks needed apparently, as they took down Fernley 60-41 on Friday, Jan. 18, and then dispatched Sparks 63-23 on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The McDermitt High Schoolgirls basketball team came home for a couple of conference games last weekend and they dispatched both of their foes handily. On Friday, Carlin came to town, and the Railroaders were sent back on the tracks with a 64-18 defeat. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-7 first quarter lead and they never looked back, as they only allowed Carlin 11 more points in the rest of the game.
The McDermitt boys basketball squad came home to start its only home games of the year last weekend, taking on Carlin Friday, and then rival Owyhee on Saturday.
The Lowry High School girls varsity basketball squad shone last weekend to improve to 7-2 in league play and 8-7 overall. On Friday night at Pat Hart Court, the Lady Bucks took on Fernley and won a back-and-forth battle 52-43.
The end of the season is quickly approaching for the Lowry High School wrestling team and the perennial power in the 3A is looking to fine tune the lineup before the postseason rush. Lowry made a rare home appearance on Wednesday night, honoring its four seniors, as Pershing County made the short trip from Lovelock. The Mustangs battled to the end but the Buckaroos held on for a 46-26 victory.
Lowry High School cross country and track star Will Kracaw will be attending the College of Idaho in the fall. “I know a lot of guys on the team up there and I have gone and visited," said Kracaw. "When I was staying with their team, I thought that I clicked with them. It was a good fit for me.”
