Lowry locks up third place in Northern 3A

The Lowry High School girls basketball squad went to South Tahoe on Friday, Feb. 8 and took out the Vikings 64-40.  Lowry outscored the Vikings 15-12 in the first quarter, and they stretched the lead to 29-20 at half.  “We came out really sluggish against South Tahoe on Friday,” said LHS coach Melanie Thurmond. “I don’t know if it was because they were on the bus for five hours and then had to sit and watch three games before they played, but it felt like we had no legs. It seemed to be a closer game than I thought it would be. If Sydney (Connors) doesn’t catch fire, it is a close game.”

WJHS volleyball starts new season

The Winnemucca Junior High volleyball teams hit the road to start its volleyball season with  matches in Carson City and Reno.  The seventh-grade squad was victorious in each of their four matches in both cities, but the eighth-grade girls struggled in Carson, only to come back strong in Reno.

Lowry’s Brooke Hansen signs to attend Culver-Stockton College

Lowry High School senior Brooke Hansen has secured a scholarship to play volleyball at NAIA Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri next year. “Brooke has always been a hard worker," said former LHS coach Brandon Eastman, who coached Hansen for the last two years. "She shows a high level of dedication and commitment to not only the sport itself at practice and in games, but to her teammates and coaches as well. I coached her for two years at the varsity level and she made a tremendous amount of improvement in that time."

Orphans wins Don Peters Memorial

Orphans out of Reno won the 2019 Don Peters Memorial Tournament held in the first weekend of February at Spare Time Bowl. The Winnemucca Inn provided $2,800 in prize money and Winners Inn contributed $1,000. Nearly 110 bowlers, with 94 of them from out of town took part in the event. Over $10,000 in prize money was awarded as 36 teams competed. 

Buckaroos split a pair of games on the road

It was a tale of two completely different games for the Lowry High School boys basketball team last weekend.  On Friday, against South Tahoe the Buckaroos came in strong and got stronger as the game went on. 

Caroline named Mountain West Player of the Week

University of Nevada senior Jordan Caroline has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week after leading the sixth ranked Wolf Pack to a pair of conference wins. 

Bulldog boys get an unexpected weekend off

The McDermitt High School boys basketball squad was scheduled to hit the road to take on Carlin and Owyhee, but they had to change its plans. The Carlin game was postponed until Thursday, Feb. 14 and the Bulldogs won by forfeit over Owyhee. 

Buckaroos finish fifth in 3A State Wrestling Tournament

The Winnemucca Events Center took on the entire state of Nevada’s wrestlers last weekend to determine the champions in each weight class.  The party started on Friday with wrestlers from more than 60 schools and continued through Saturday until the late afternoon, when they turned off the lights and turned on the spotlights for three mats of championship duals. 

Greenwave boys rally to knock off Buckaroos

The Lowry High School boys basketball team took a hard loss against Churchill County (Fallon) on Tuesday in its last home game of the season 73-51 on Pat Hart Court.  The Buckaroos got off to a quick start, leading 23-10 after eight minutes of play but it was all Fallon after that. The Greenwave outscored the Buckaroos 63-28 in the final three quarters to solidify second place in the Northern 3A at 13-2. 

Bulldogs drop two games at home last weekend

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team stood at 2-18 overall and 1-4 in league play coming into last Friday’s home game against Wells. The only McDermitt win in the Eastern 1A came against Carlin on Jan. 18 at home, when they pounded the Railroaders 76-40.  On Friday, Feb. 1, Wells came to town and took down the Bulldogs 54-30. 

Lady Bucks upset bid over Greenwave comes up just short

The Lowry High School girls basketball team took on league-leading Fallon in its last home game of the season and dropped a 65-60 decision to the two-time defending 3A state champion. The Lady Bucks didn’t get a win, but LHS girls varsity head coach Melanie Thurmond saw the brighter side of the game. 

Lady Bulldogs take down Wells in last home game 53-36, remain undefeated in league

Friday night was Jaimi Wilkinson’s last home game as the McDermitt High School’s girls head coach of the varsity team.  The Lady Bulldogs took her out with style, finishing off the Railroaders 53-36 at home. McDermitt brought in a 12-3 overall record and they stood at 4-0 in league play coming into Friday’s game against Wells. McDermitt had also taken down the Leopards on their court 50-43 back on Jan. 11. 

Lady Bucks split with Spring Creek, Elko

The Lowry High School girls varsity team brought a 10-7 overall record into Friday’s match-up against Spring Creek and were sitting in third place in the Northern 3A division at 9-2 behind undefeated Churchill County (Fallon) (12-0) and Spring Creek (10-1).  The Spartans brought their A-game and put down the Lady Bucks 50-40 on Friday at Pat Hart Court.  The contest between the rivals was a back-and forth affair for much of the first half.

Lowry finishes third at Northern 3A Regional

The Lowry High School wrestling team will send nine wrestlers to the NIAA State Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center. The Buckaroos finished third at the Northern 3A Regional Championships this past weekend in Fernley with 165 points. 

Buckaroos take down Spartans, lose to Indians

The Lowry High School boys varsity squad looked great on Friday against Spring Creek, but then they took a step back when they faced Elko on Saturday afternoon.  The Buckaroos record coming into Friday was 12-5 overall and 9-2 in league play. After the weekend  Lowry sits at 13-6 overall and 10-3 in league play.  It was Winterfest week at Lowry starting on Monday Jan. 28. Fans wore white on Friday and black on Saturday to try and help the home team out with team spirit.
