Bulldogs knocked off by Falcons

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team went to the Northern 1A Regional Tournament with a 2-7 league record as the No. 4  seed from the East to take on the West No. 1 seed Sierra Lutheran (9-1). 

Lowry girls earn sixth consecutive trip to the 3A state tournament

On Thursday, the Lowry High School girls basketball team went to North Valleys High School in Reno as the No. 3 seed with a 14-4 league record to take on number six Elko (8-10).  Lowry scratched out a 43-42 win over Elko in first game of the NIAA 3A Northern Tournament.

Vegas bound: McDermitt girls knock off Eureka to win regional title

At the beginning of the school year, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team was not sure its was going to field a team this season. So, when things got a little interesting for the Lady Bulldogs in the regional championship on Saturday afternoon at Wooster High School in Reno, the girls took it in stride and pulled away for their first regional title since 2016. McDermitt built a 14-point lead in the second quarter against rival Eureka, only to see three-time Eastern 1A Player of the Year, Precious Masters, leave the game with an injury. 

Norvell names Shipp defensive line coach

Nevada football coach Jay Norvell announced today veteran coach and former NFL linebacker Jackie Shipp will coach the Wolf Pack’s defensive line heading into the 2019 season. “Jackie has recruited and developed some great NFL defensive linemen,” said Norvell. “He also has coached in some of the biggest games in college football. Jackie Shipp is a great addition to our Wolf Pack staff.”

Lady Bucks double up on the road heading into the playoffs

The Lowry High School girls basketball team went out of town to finish off their season in style last weekend.  On Friday, Feb. 15,  at Fernley the Lady Bucks started a little slow, but they held on to grab a 65-60 win against the Vaqueros. “We felt like we were in control for the entire game,” said LHS coach Melanie Thurmond. “It was up and down, but we were never down by more than a couple of points. Rachel Garrison stepped up big for us, she had 13 points and ten rebounds.”

Rural Basketball League visits Denio

The Humboldt County Rural Basketball League made a stop in Denio on Saturday, Feb. 2.  In a Divsion 2 contest, Kings River/Orovada defeated McDermitt Blue 29-23. In the other Division 2 game, Denio/Fields beat Paradise 26-17. Division 2 consists of third, fourth and fifth grades. In Division 1 action, Orovada knocked off Kings River 25-18 and Paradise beat Denio/Fields 24-18. The Division 1 group includes sixth, seventh and eighth grade.  

Lowry boys close out regular season with two victories on the road

After ending the regular season with two road wins, the Lowry High School varsity boys basketball team  now sits at 16-8 overall and 13-5 in league play. The Buckaroos finished third in the Northern 3A standings and will be the third seed in the Northern 3A playoffs that begin this week in Reno. Fernley hosted Lowry on Friday, and the Buckaroos grabbed a 63-47 win against the Vaqueros.  Assistant coach Dave Schwartz was covering the Buckaroos on Friday for an ailing coach Chad Peters.

Lowry girls win regular season finales

The Lowry High School varsity girls basketball team finished the regular season with a pair of wins on the road and finished third in the Northern 3A standings at 14-4.

Bulldogs close out regular season schedule at Eureka

After trying and failing to re-schedule its game against Carlin due to weather, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team managed to make it to Eureka to play their last game of the regular season. However, the Bulldogs suffered a 64-55 loss to the Vandals.

Lady Bulldogs finish league play undefeated going into 1A regionals

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team was set to play at Carlin last Thursday but the game was cancelled due to weather.  “I had a long conversation with the NIAA last week, and they assured me that if we took out Eureka that the Carlin game did not need to happen. They would call it and force a forfeit,” said MHS coach Jaimi Wilkinson. “Hopefully they come through on that, what with it being a weekend and a holiday on Monday. Going to Carlin on Tuesday and back to Reno on Thursday would not be fair to my kids, especially when we did everything that we could to get to Carlin to play that game.”

McDermitt plays host to rural basketball

The Rural Basketball League was in McDermitt on Saturday, Feb. 9. Everyone started off the day traversing some gnarly roadways and if that wasn't gut wrenching enough, the close games and defeats that were handed out while in the gym definitely kept spectators on their toes.   In a Division 1 game, Orovada took on Denio/Fields and at the buzzzer, Orovada took the 25-24 win.

Skylar Estes steps up to varsity volleyball coach at Lowry

Lowry High School has hired a new varsity  volleyball head coach to replace Brandon Eastman who will be leaving to continue his schooling out of state. He will be looking to get his degree in Sports Management.   Skylar Estes has been promoted from the JV squad coach to the varsity job and will begin in the 2019-20 season.  “This is my second year teaching Pre-K at Grass Valley Elementary,” Estes said. “I was Lowry High School’s freshman volleyball coach for one year, and then I was the JV coach last year.”

Lady Bulldogs clinch Eastern 1A title

The McDermitt High School (MHS) girls basketball team matched up with the Braves on the road last Saturday, and they emerged with a 60-47 victory.  The win clinched the Eastern 1A regular season title and the Lady Bulldogs will be one of two No. 1 seeds for next weeks regional tournament in Reno. 

Nevada to retire Fazekas' number

The most decorated men’s basketball player in Nevada history will receive one of the greatest honors on Feb. 27 when Nick Fazekas will see his No. 22 Wolf Pack jersey hoisted at Lawlor Events Center
