Winnemucca plays host to annual high school rodeo event

The Winnemucca Events Complex was the site of the Nevada High School Rodeo last weekend and 18 different clubs came to compete.  This event has been going on in Winnemucca since 1957 and 140 kids came to compete this year. Danyelle Draper was a fan at the event

Lady Bucks blank Wolverines 37-0 in two games

The Lowry High School softball team traveled to Truckee, Calif., last weekend and laid down the law to finish off the regular season. The Lady Bucks secured the No. 2 two seed in this weeks 3A North Regional playoffs.  Lowry claimed a couple of three-inning wins 16-0 and 21-0 to finish the season with a 17-12 overall record and a 15-3 tally in league play. “The girls played well," said LHS coach Austin Mayo. "They did a good job of staying invested and getting up for a game that we knew wasn’t going to be too competitive. We are just trying to get better every pitch and every at-bat.”

Lowry golfers turn in third-place finish at Genoa Ranch

Six Lowry High School golfers took to the links at Genoa Ranch Golf course last Wednesday and secured the third team spot by carding a 368 in their quest to continue on into the post season. 

Buckaroo track and field teams collects gold at home invitational

Fourteen gold medals were awarded to the Lowry High School track and field team last Saturday when they hosted 1A-3A teams in the last meet of the regular season.  "It was a really good meet with 12 teams here — some small, some big," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "A lot of teams like to come here because it is an efficient meet and we get it done quick. The community, the teachers, and the coaches all work together to put on a good meet, like they have for the past fifty-one years here.”

Bulldogs visit Winnemucca for Lowry Invite

McDermitt High School’s Ben Draunidalo ran to a silver medal last Saturday at the Lowry Invitational Track Meet in Winnemucca in the 100 meters with a time of 11.58 seconds. He settled for bronze in the 200 meters (23.99) and teamed up with Jagger Hinkey, Robert Pope, and Alex Navarro (47.67) in the 4x 100 meter relay for a fourth place finish.  

Wolf Pack football again earns public recognition in NCAA APR report

The University of Nevada athletics department saw its football program receive a Public Recognition Award as part of the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Programy.  The APR program is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all NCAA programs.  The Wolf Pack’s football team was in the top 10 percent of all of the teams in their respective sports to earn the Public Recognition Awards. This is the second straight year that Nevada football has been honored.

Nevada football to play at Iowa in 2022

The Nevada football team will play at Iowa in 2022, the schools announced today. The game will be played on Sept. 17, 2022 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.  It will be the Wolf Pack’s first-ever game against the Hawkeyes.

Buckaroo track hits the Big George Invitational

Douglas High School in Minden was the site of the last road meet of the regular season for the Lowry High School track and field team last weekend, and the girls carried the torch for the Bucks. “It was a good meet," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "We had a lot of personal records and a lot of good times and nobody got hurt.” Becca Kuskie finished first in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12 minutes, 15.38 seconds.

McDermitt track competes at Ranchers Invitational

On Tuesday, the McDermitt High School track and field squad went to the Ranchers Invitational in Crane, Ore., and emerged with some nice hardware.  Ben Draunidalo ran the 100 meters in 12.12 seconds for the win, In addition, he came out on top in the 200 meters (24.38) as well.  Draunidalo teamed up with Jagger Hinkey, Robert Pope, and Alex Navarro for a second place finish (48.94) in the 4x100 meter relay. “Ben did well again,” said MHS track and field coach Richard Egan. “He keeps stepping it up and he had some good competition, so he had to work a little bit. It was a good measuring stick for him going into regionals and he held up.”  Hinkey got his gold medal in the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 1 inch. He finished just off the stage with fourth-place finishes in the javelin (127-1) and triple jump (36-9.25).

Masters heading to Feather River College

McDermitt High School senior Precious Masters will be moving to Quincy, Calif., this coming fall  to play basketball and begin to further her education at Feather River College.  "I picked Feather River because Coach (Brent) Stephens did a really good job of recruiting," said Masters. "He made it to our important games at state and regionals. I went there to visit and it is a really beautiful place out there. I have a couple of friends from the Reno area that will be going there too. I am going to miss Coach Wilkinson the most at school, and I am going to miss the support of the town of McDermitt. I want to keep playing basketball after Feather River, hopefully in Division One, but we will see how it goes.”

Marriott returns to the mound to help Lowry win finale against Elko at home

The Lowry High School baseball team returned home last weekend for the final time this season to take on Elko for a three-game series that would likely decide whether the Buckaroos would be going to the playoffs this season.  On Friday, Lowry went down 7-3 to Elko.  The Indians jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, and Lowry could not make up any ground as the game wore on. Ridge Ricketts and Jordan Parker both went 2-for-4 at the plate  for the Buckaroos and  Garette Hinshaw was 2-for-3. But four errors on defense seemed to be the difference in the first game of the series.

Cars back on the track at Winnemucca Regional Raceway

The dirt track was fired up last Sunday as all classes of cars raced at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway. The racing continues all summer, starting on Sunday, May 5 at  1 p.m., Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. and the 3rd Annual High Desert Classic Shootout will be on Saturday, June 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 2 starting at 1 p.m. June 14, July 12, July 26, August 23, and September 13 will all feature Friday Night Racing starting at 7 p.m. More information can be found at winnemuccaracing.com.  

Lady Bucks take two games from Indians

The Lowry High School softball squad came home last weekend and laid down the law to Elko with a 13-0 blowout in their first game of the series. Mackenzie Salas-Begay needed only 61 pitches in her two-hit shutout of Elko. “On Friday the girls came out fired up and played well, they knew the importance of the game,” said Lowry softball coach Austin Mayo. “They hit the ball well, everyone fielded well, and Mac pitched well. When we are clicking on all cylinders we are kinda hard to beat.” The Lady Bucks scored two runs in the first inniug, four in the second and they added another six runs in the third inning, while holding the Indians scoreless in the five inning contest.

LHS track competes in Carson

The Lowry High School track team traveled to Carson City for a pair of meets last Friday and Saturday.  The JV Invitational on Friday was the site of 22 personal records for the Lowry boys and another 10 for the girls. Tyler J. Morrison was the top boy finisher with a seventh place personal record time of 2 minutes, 25.58 seconds in the 800 meters, a PR 24th-place finish in the 400 meters (59.52), and he combined with Celso Ruiz, Jesse Hawkins, and Christopher McGuire for an eighth place finish in the 4x 800 relay (10:08.32).
