Brandon Talton kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game, lifting Nevada to a 41-38 victory over San Jose State on Saturday after the Spartans rallied from a 21-point deficit.
It was a picture-perfect day for racing, as the Lowry High School cross country team held its annual meet at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Friday afternoon. “It was a great day for us,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “We had a lot of personal bests and that is all you can ask for as a coach for the kids to have a really good day.” Sophomore Jovi Kuskie provided a runner-up finish for the Lady Bucks in the varsity race with a time of 19 minutes, 37.5 seconds. She was neck-and-neck with Spring Creek’s Kendra Lusk for much of the race. Lusk pulled away late to win in a time of 19:20.8. Spring Creek’s Grave Florence (20:14.5) was fourth and Elko’s Xandry DeArrieta (20:51.9) and Lowry’s Adia Bengochea (21:10.8) rounded out the top five.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team could not overcome a slow start at Truckee on Friday, Oct. 4, and suffered a 3-2 loss to the Wolverines. It was just the third league road match for the Buckaroos, who played seven of their first Northern 3A matches at home. Lowry dropped to 5-4-1 in the Northern 3A, but is still in the middle of the playoff hunt. “We just got off to a slow start and you can’t do that against a team like Truckee,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “They are not the Truckee of old like they have been, but are still a good team. I liked that we came back and made it a game. They were on two red cards and if we had more time, I think we could have come all the way back.”
Teri Kracaw shot a low-gross score of 98 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club ace of aces tournament on Tuuesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Carole Doughty was low net in the first flight at 76.
The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team picked up three wins in four games over the last two weeks. Winnemucca traveled to Pyramid Lake on Saturday, Sept. 28, and beat Pershing County Middle School 48-8. Savannah Stoker has 22 points in the win, while Alexis Galarza equaled the Colts total with eight. Jackie Sanchez netted six points and Autum Sanchez, Katlyn Gomez and Miranda Draper each had four points. In its second game, Winnemucca suffered a 26-24 defeat to Pyramid Lake. Stoker and Jackie Sanchez paced the Warriors with 10 and eight points, respectively. Cambria Tisue had four points and Galarza two.
The Lowry High School cross country was back in action last Friday at the Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks. Sophomore Jovi Kuskie finished fifth in the varsity girls race in a time of 20 minutes, 51 seconds. She was the highest finisher among small-school runners. The top six runners were separated by 43 seconds. Damonte Ranch’s Carley Legenbauer won the race with a time of 20:15. Bishop Mangoue’s Maddy Kirvan (20:30) and Damonte Ranch’s Marena Middleton (20:33) were second and third, respectively. All three are seniors. “Jovi was right in it until the end where she was out-kicked at the line,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “She raced very tough and was able to stay with those 4A girls.”
If you are a fan of the old Western Athletic Conference or the Big Sky, last Friday night in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., was the place for you. The Lowry High School football team and South Tahoe combined for 877 yards of offense, with the Vikings having nine more yards than the Buckaroos. However, the score was a little more lopsided and that was in Lowry’s favor, 61-38. The Buckaroos improved to 5-1 in the Northern 3A and 6-1 overall and clinched a playoff spot for the second consecutive season. Lowry looked poised to blow the game open, scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the contest. The Buckaroos drove down the field on their opening possession and capped off the 65-yard drive with a 16-yard run by Anthony Peterson. After forcing South Tahoe to punt on its initial possession, Lowry got the ball back and drove 63 yards. Chance Huitt ended the drive with a touchdown pass to Tyler Neu for a 13-0 lead with 5:25 left in the first quarter. It was the first of three touchdowns receptions for Neu.
Even though it was a clear and sunny day in Winnemucca on Wednesday, it was not an ideal day to be on the golf course. The Lowry High School girls golf team hosted the Northern 3A, in cold and windy conditions at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. The day before temperatures were 30 degrees warmer in Fernley. “It was cold and windy but it could have been worse,” said LHS coach Savannah Talbott. Angelina Martinez led the Lady Bucks on the day with a round of 100, which put her fifth overall. Teammates Kaitlyn Hales shot a 103 and Bailey Hayes carded a 108.

The McDermitt High School volleyball team dropped a doubleheader on Friday against Eureka.
After spending pretty much the first half of the season on the road, the Lowry High School girls soccer team made its third appearance at home this past Friday night against Truckee. The last time the Lady Bucks saw their home field was Sept. 14 against Incline. Truckee entered the match second in the Northern 3A at 8-1-1 and claimed a 9-1 win over Lowry. The Wolverines collected goals in the 6th and 7th minutes off of shots by Alondra Villa and Taya Matt. Matt’s goal came off a rebound in the Lowry box.
The Lowry High School volleyball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon with a straight-set victory (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) over Sparks in Winnemucca. The Lady Bucks got off to a slow start, as the Railroaders led early at 5-4. However, a kill by Eva Andradottir and a two straight aces by Sierra Maestrejuan put the Lady Bucks in front for good at 7-5. Two kills by Shanae Smith and one more by Isabelle Ozanick in succession started an 8-1 run that saw Lowry lead 19-8. Reece Kalkoske and Maestrejuan capped off the run with kills of their own. Maestrejuan had thee kills in the final four points, with Destiny Starkey adding a kill as well.
Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped 1.7% this year for its fourth straight decline, and five of the six biggest drops were by teams with losing records. Toronto, Seattle, San Francisco and Detroit combined for more than 1.8 million fewer tickets, and a 259-388 won-lost record. The 30 teams averaged 28,339, according to the commissioner’s office, down from 28,830 last year _ the first time the average was below 30,000 since 2003. Total attendance of 68.5 million was down more than 5 million from 2015. The players’ association maintains attendance has been hurt by an increase in rebuilding teams, which its members and staff label “tanking.” “The willful failure of too many franchises to field competitive teams and put their best players on the field is unquestionably hurting our industry,” union head Tony Clark said last week.
Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 45 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club blind hole tournament held Tuesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The Lowry High School cross country team made its way back in the mountains last Saturday in Truckee, Calif., beating the nasty weather that later hit the Sierra Nevada’s. “The kids had a great day of running and we managed to get done before the storm hit,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “The kids ran hard against both 3A and 4A schools.” Jovi Kuskie continued her strong sophomore campaign, finishing second in the 3.1-mile race with a time of 20 minutes, 42 seconds. Bishop Manogue senior Madison Krivan won the race at 20:18. Carson’s Hannah Kaiser (21:16) was third and Truckee’s Isabella Terrazas (21:23), Amelia Swanson (21:46) and Soney Strusinski (21:56) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
