Say goodbye to the preseason glitches. Eight volleyball teams competed in a tournament at Pershing County High School last weekend. Smith Valley, Wells and Mineral County (Hawthorne) came from the 1A.
Twenty Pershing County High School girls soccer players and its coaches are hoping for a big turnout at their home soccer tournament this weekend. The Mustangs will host Lowry, White Pine, Fernley, Elko, West Wendover, Yerington and Spring Creek.
The Lowry High School cross country team made its way to western Nevada this past Friday to open the season at the Douglas Class Races in Minden. The racers are divided up into freshman, sophomore, junior and senior races at a distance of 2.55 miles.
A season ago the Lowry High School football team beat two 5A opponents in Douglas and Galena and finished the season 6-3. However, those three losses came in Northern 3A East play and the Buckaroos were left out of the playoffs.
Lovelock is ready for some Pershing County Mustang football. Eighteen athletes are about to launch the 2022-2023 season. In 2021, the boys finished 5-4, overall and 4-3 in the 2A Northern League. The Mustangs ranked fourth, behind Yerington, Battle Mountain and Incline. This past Saturday, the varsity and JV teams scrimmaged in Battle Mountain.
The Pershing County soccer team hopes to build on their foundation and soar to new heights. A roster was not available at press time but it’s a good bet most of the squad will return and they’ll pick up some freshmen. Team loyalty is a strength.
The 2021 volleyball season is going to be a tough one to beat. However, 12 athletes are going to try their best. Last season, the girls made it to the second round of the regional playoffs where they lost to Yerington in a high stakes match. Yerington progressed to the state competition where they lost 3-0 to the Meadows School, the 2021 state champions. The Mustangs finished third in the 2A Northern with a 11-4 league record, losing to Yerington and Incline twice.
The Battle Mountain NNA swim team was back in action from Aug. 5-7 at the 2022 High Country Short Course Championship at the Carson Valley Swim Center in Minden. The swim meet is more on the fun side with live music nearby and a theme of the Greatest Show on Earth. After raining the first day, the rest of the meet went smoothly.

The Pershing County High School athletic department will be hosting its annual dinner and parking spot auction on Thursday, at 6 p.m. at the newly designed entrance to Pershing County High School.
We Ustacould won the 2022 Winners Inn Shootout bowling tournament held Aug. 6-7 at Spare Time Bowl in Winnemucca. The Winners Inn and Winnemucca Inn helped sponsor the tournament of 90 players, including 80 of them from out of town. Over $13,000 in prize money was awarded as 30 teams competed.
Bryn Echevarria shot a low-gross core of 69 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Pro’s Posse tournament held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Melissa Murphy was second in the first flight at 71.
