The Battle Mountain High School cross country team made its way through Northern Nevada last week with two meets. The week started out in Sparks on Tuesday, Sept. 27, for the Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park. The meet was postponed earlier in the year due to smoke in the area. The Northern 1A/2A Regional Championships will take place later in October at Shadow Mountain Park.
The Lowry High School cross country team was busy last week with a pair of meets in Northern Nevada.
It didn’t take long for the Battle Mountain High School football team to make a statement on homecoming night this past Friday at Tim Knight Field. The Longhorns scored 14 points in just over three minutes on one offensive play and cruised to a 46-0 win over Silver Stage to improve to 3-0 in the Northern 2A and 4-1 overall.
When the Lowry High School girls golf team hosted the Northern 3A at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 26, the Lady Bucks’ Katie Cassinelli came to the course with the mindset of not letting Douglas, the defending state champion have an individual champion. Even though the Tigers won the tournament with a 349, Cassinelli kept the individual crown in Winnemucca, as she was the low medalist with a career-best round of 78.
After the soccer and volleyball teams won their homecoming games, attention shifted to the Pershing County football team. The Mustangs hoped to make it a three-peat by beating Yerington but the defending state champions walked off with the win 41-24. Fans packed the stands on both sides. It was the Yerington's first road trip of the year. It was also their first league game, after blanking Dayton in August (44-0). Lovelock made the Lions work harder for the win.
Homecoming doesn't get any better than this. Last Thursday, the PCHS volleyball team went 3-1 against Battle Mountain. The Mustangs beat their rival school in four sets 25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20. Pershing County fans were vocal throughout the fast-paced game. The winning streak continued on Saturday, as the Mustangs beat visiting West Wendover in three sets 25-12, 25-10, 28-26. With the wins, the Mustangs improved to 10-6, overall and 5-1 in the Northern 2A.
The Battle Mountain NNA swim team fought through smoky conditions and canceled events as it traveled to Minden from Sept. 16-18 for the Molly Lahlum Memorial Autumn Freeze.
One of the more anticipated match-ups of the season took part in Elko this past Friday night, as the Lowry High School football team began play in the Northern 3A East. It turned out to be an unexpected senior night for the Indians, who were playing their final regular season home game due to Dayton canceling its varsity season.
The Pershing County High School girls soccer started a winning streak on Homecoming Day in Lovelock. The Mustangs defeated Battle Mountain 2-1. On Saturday they beat the visiting Yerington Lions 4-1. That’s six more goals for the Mustangs, bringing their total to 14, about four more than this time last year. With the wins, the Mustangs improve to 3-5, overall, and 3-4 in the 2A Northern League.
The McDermitt High School volleyball team was back on the road this past weekend for a pair of Eastern 1A matches, where the Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season. McDermitt opened the weekend on the Nevada-Idaho border in Jackpot, where the Jaguars won on their home floor 25-17, 26-16, 25-22. Jackpot is undefeated in the Eastern 1A.
After having its last two meets canceled to due smoke in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area, the Lowry High School cross country team was back on the course this past Saturday in California at the Truckee Invitational.
Mother Nature provided an excellent day for the Battle Mountain High School girls golf team to host its tournament this past Thursday at Mountain View Golf Course.
It took a little bit longer than expected after a slow start but the Lowry High School volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight, with a four-set victory over Churchill County on Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Winnemucca. The Greenwave took advantage of a slow start by the Lady Bucks to win the first set 25-19, but Lowry bounced back to win the final three sets 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22 to improve to 13-4 overall, 1-0 in the Northern 3A East and 6-0 in crossover matches. Churchill County scored the first four points of the opening set, only to see Lowry score the next four, with the last two coming off a kill by Jada Matheny and an ace by Kailey Franklin.
Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 79 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Criers Tournament held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team hit the road last week for a pair of league matches. The Lady Longhorns made their way to Lovelock on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and suffered a 2-1 loss to the Lady Mustangs in Northern 2A action. After a day off, Battle Mountain was back on the bus this past Thursday for a road trip to Ely.
