Future of CFP: How would 12-team playoff look this season?

The College Football Playoff is two years away from expanding, and those involved in growing the format from four to 12 teams have already said the first two seasons will be a test run.

Battle Mountain boys pick up two wins at Serpent Classic

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up two wins in five games this past weekend at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne. The Longhorns played a pair of games last Thursday to start the season, losing to Churchill County 60-28 in the opening game. Later that night, Battle Mountain took on host Mineral County and lost 41-34. The Serpents lost in the 1A state semifinals last year to Green Valley Christian.

Pershing County’s varsity and JV basketball teams launch preseason slate

It was a huge weekend for Pershing County basketball. The varsity and JV boys and girls all got off to good starts. The varsity launched their preseasons at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne — meanwhile, the JV hosted a tournament in Lovelock.

PCHS wrestlers shine at Douglas JV Tournament

Four Pershing County High School wrestlers came home tired and sore from the Douglas JV tournament this past weekend. Logan Hunt, Jeff Elerick, Tavis Lawrence and Wyatt Hughes all gained valuable experience.

Lowry boys begin season with three losses in Elko

The Lowry High School boys basketball team took to the floor for the first time this season this past weekend in Elko under the direction of new coach Nate Green. The Buckaroos dropped all three of its games at the Brent Stokes State Farm Classic, but Green left Elko still happy about what is ahead. “We are going to be okay,” said the coach. “We made some little mistakes that hurt us but overall, we played pretty good against three good teams.”

Lady Longhorns win three games in Serpent Classic

With a new look on the bench in Michael Speers, who replaced longtime coach Paul Tremayne, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team started its season with three wins at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne this past weekend.

McDermitt girls go undefeated at WREC Classic

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team made it a perfect weekend for girls basketball in Humboldt County with four impressive wins at the WREC Classic in Carlin this past weekend.  The Lady Bulldogs won every game by 23 points or more to start the season at 4-0. The young squad includes six freshman, three sophomores and a junior.

Lowry wrestlers win four of five duals in Fallon

The Lowry High School wrestling steam started its season on a high note, winning four of its five duals at Churchill County in Fallon this past weekend. The Buckaroos beat Fernley 48-30, Churchill County 64-12, Elko 78-6, Carson 54-30 and lost to Spanish Springs 48-36. “We wrestled pretty good for the first time out,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “There were a lot of pins on the weekend and not a lot of the matches went all the way. We gave Spanish Springs a good battle but could not hang on at the end.” 

Lady Bucks win four games in Reno

The last time the Lowry High School girls basketball team was on the floor, they were celebrating a state championship at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. Since then, the Lady Bucks have a new coach, which is a former coach in Chelsea Cabatbat and have replaced four starting seniors that are now in college. Despite all the new faces in place, it seems nothing has changed.  The Lady Bucks picked up four wins at the Spanish Springs tournament in Reno and Sparks this past weekend.  The four wins extended Lowry’s win streak to 23 games, dating back to last year.

Pershing County fall sports awards light up the night

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, a crowd packed the high school auditorium to celebrate a successful fall sports season for Pershing County High School.  Now most of the athletes transition to wrestling or basketball, the winter sports.  Principal Jonathan Reynolds congratulated those who excelled academically, including Yasmine McKinney, Kaylen Halverson, Jessica Gonzalez, Andrea Canchola, Connor Fecht, Wyatt Diaz and Nova Karlsson.

UNLV claims cannon, holds off Nevada late for 27-22 win

Johnathan Baldwin broke up a Nate Cox fourth-down pass on the final play of the game to preserve UNLV’s 27-22 win over rival Nevada on Saturday to claim the Fremont Cannon in the annual rivalry game.

The Pershing County High School wrestling team hopes to have higher numbers this year. Coach Mike Brooks says 11 athletes showed up for practices last week.

The Pershing County High School boys basketball team is ready to play some hoop.  Last season they said farewell to three seniors - Ashton Nolf, Esteban Vidrio and Diego Gonzalez. But there’s no shortage of talent on the 2022-23 team.

Pershing County girls basketball is 'hungry to win'

A lot of people get the winter blues. Luckily, Lovelock has an antidote in the form of the Pershing County High School girls basketball team.  They're a crowd-pleaser because, win or lose, they give each game their all.  This season could be big. A record-breaking 23 varsity and JV girls showed up for practice.  "We have high expectations and lots of varsity returners that are hungry to win," said coach Lee Houston.  The varsity returners are Kaydance Happy, Taylor Garland, Anna Happy, Raegan Burrows and Aaliyah Allen. Last year they led the team to zone as the fourth seed where they lost to Incline.
