The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team collected one win in thee games in Northern 2A play last week.
The Lowry High School boys gave up a fourth-quarter lead in its match-up with Spring Creek on Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Winnemucca, as the Spartans scored 27 point in the last eight minutes to come away with a 64-55 win. The loss dropped Lowry to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Northern 3A East. The Buckaroos are 5-0 against the Northern 3A West. Spring Creek led for much of the opening quarter, when Lowry went on a 6-0 run started by Dempsey Jenkins and capped off by a bucket and two free throws from Isaac Danner to give the Buckaroos a 10-8 advantage.
Battle Mountain’s Nevaeh Serna competed at the 2023 Blizzard Blast from Jan. 13-15 at the Carson Aquatic Center in Carson City. She was the only NNA swimmer in the opening meet of the season.
It was a challenging week for the PCHS boys basketball team. They lost two league games on the road — one in West Wendover 69-36 and one in Battle Mountain 60-41. They played hard and look forward to the rest of the season. Pershing County stands fifth in the Northern 2A at 8-10 overall, and 3-4 in the league.
The Pershing County High School girls basketball program made its annual trek to West Wendover last week. The Lady Mustangs played on Friday, stayed the night and competed against Battle Mountain on Saturday. The girls had mixed results over the two days. They lost to West Wendover 43-37 but beat Battle Mountain 45-26. Pershing County now stands third in the Northern 2A at 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the league.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team was on the road this past Friday in Eureka and dropped a Northern 1A East contest to the Vandals 69-29.
The battle for the top spot in the Northern 1A East was at stake this past Friday night, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team traveled to Eureka, as both teams entered the contest undefeated in league play. It looked like the Lady Bulldogs would leave Eureka with the all-important win, but the Vandals pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 15-4 run to win 50-40.
Six Pershing County High School wrestlers competed in Fernley’s Vaquero Classic last weekend. They included Xavier Weatherman at 120 pounds, Jeffrey Elerick (132), Angelo Gibson (132), Tavis Lawrence (132), Wyatt Hughes (150) and Logan Hunt (215).
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up two wins in three game sin Northern 2A play this past week on its home floor.
The last time the Lowry High School girls basketball team played Spring Creek it was at the NIAA State Championships at Cox Pavilion in February 2022 in Las Vegas. The Lady Bucks won their seventh state championship that day. Eleven months later, two teams that look much different, took the floor in Winnemucca.
It was a busy week for the Lowry High School wrestling team with duals in Winnemucca and Idaho and a tournament in Fernley. Lowry hosted it senior night on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with a 42-34 win over Fernley and 65-15 victory over Battle Mountain. “I appreciate them coming over to give us a senior night,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “We haven’t had the chance to do that in a while. It was a good night for us. You never know in duals. The match-ups fell right for us against Battle Mountain. That is a good team.”

Against the Buckaroos, Stone Whitlock, Cruz Jimenez and Sean Scherer picked up wins.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team turned in a strong performance this past weekend at the Kiwanis Invitational at Spring Creek High School. The Longhorns had three wrestlers finish in the top of four of their respective weight classes. Cruz Jimenez was second at 106 pounds, Sean Scherer placed third at 113 and Stone Whitlock finished fourth at 165 pounds.
Last week the Pershing County High School boys basketball team launched a three-game winning streak against Coral Academy (87-54), Silver Stage (69-15) and Yerington (54-43). “All week we had one goal in mind - to sweep all three games. We did just that. We aren’t close to where we need to be yet but we’re headed in that direction,” said coach Jesse Canchola.
It was a winning week for the PCHS girls hoop team. The Lady Mustangs beat Coral Academy (50-18) and Silver Stage (50-9) on the road. This past Saturday, Pershing County hosted Yerington and won 40-24.
