There’s nothing sadder in basketball than watching a lead slip away. Especially in a high stakes game on your home court. That’s what happened to the Pershing County High School girls basketball team last Thursday night when they hosted Battle Mountain. The final score was 39-37, with Battle Mountain coming back to win.
It was up to the Pershing County High School boys on Thursday night.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team had a busy end to the regular season with three games last weekend. The Lady Longhorns were in Lovelock on Thursday and rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat Pershing County 39-37. The Mustangs scored 11 of the first 13 points of the game, as Christina Holley made the only field goal for Battle Mountain in the first eight minutes of play.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team finished the regular season with a split of two games against Spring Creek and Elko. The Buckaroos finished the regular season 10-12 overall, 3-7 in the Northern 3A East and 6-0 against the Northern 3A West Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Wednesday, Feb. 8, and came away with a 64-55 win after trailing much of the contest.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team celebrated Winterfest with a pair of wins to end the regular season this past weekend.
Lovelock has a new state wrestling champ. Jeffrey Elerick is the third freshmen wrestler in Pershing County High School history to pull off the win. Many fans remember 2010, the year Brice Gorsline and Jared Jensen medaled as freshmen. Now, 13 years later, Elerick joins their ranks. In 2010, Tom Brooks was coach. He passed the baton to his sons, Mike and Buzz. They’ve coached most of the high school wrestlers, including Elerick, since they were PeeWees.
Lowry High School’s Jhett Harber captured the 157-pound title at the NIAA 3A State Wrestling Championships this past weekend at the Winnemucca Event Center.
There are three givens in this world. Death, taxes and the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team. The Longhorns claimed the NIAA 2A State Championship this past Saturday in Winnemucca. The Longhorns won their 21st title overall, the most overall in the state of Nevada. Lowry is second with 16. Cruz Jimenez at 106 pounds, Sean Scherer (113), Liam Bundrock (120), Asher Bundrock (157) and Stone Whitlock won individual championships. Battle Mountain won with 157 points, easily out-distancing Yerington at 95. Pahranagat Valley was third at 91 and Lake Mead (90) and White Pine (86) rounded out the top five.
Five Pershing County High School wrestlers represented their school at the Northern 2A Regional Championships on Saturday. Pershing County High School hosted 68 wrestlers, their coaches and parents.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team split its final two games of the season this past weekend on its home floor during Winterfest week. The Lady Longhorns hosted North Tahoe on Friday and the Lakers remained undefeated in the Northern 2A with a 44-28 win. The Lakers are 11-0 in league play.
The Pershing County High School girls basketball team played its last road game of the year this past week. After this week’s home games they’re headed for postseason.
The Pershing County boys basketball team hosted Silver Stage last Tuesday night (Jan. 31). The Mustangs beat the visiting Nighthawks 68-19. On Friday, they traveled to Yerington and lost 51-47
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team closed out its home schedule for the year this past weekend with losses to North Tahoe and Incline.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team took on league-leading Eureka at home on Friday night and the Vandals left the Nevada/Oregon border with a 56-18 win to stay undefeated in the Eastern 1A. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-8 in league play and 1-19 overall.
The battle for the top spot in the Eastern 1A looked a little different this past Friday, as both the McDermitt High School girls basketball team and league leading Eureka were missing players.
