Last Thursday, the fire and police departments gave the Pershing County High School girls basketball team a sendoff they’ll always remember. Sirens howled as the girls headed to Las Vegas to compete in the state tournament for the first time in six years. The student body turned out en masse to wish them luck.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team had its season end in the opening round of the NIAA 1A State Championships, with a 32-29 loss to Pahranagat Valley last Thursday at North Valleys High School in Reno.

About the only people that gave the Lowry High School girls basketball a chance to beat Fernley in Saturday’s NIAA 3A A State Championship game at Lawlor Events Center in Reno was the squad itself and the Buckaroo fans in the stands. The Vaqueros beat the Lady Bucks by a combined 52 points in three previous games this season.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team bid for a second straight bid to the state tournament came up short on Thursday afternoon at Incline High School with a 32-27 loss to Yerington in the opening round of the Northern 2A Regional Championships. The Lady Longhorns scored the first 10 points of the contest and the Lions did not lead until there was 90 seconds to play, as Battle Mountain finished the season at 13-11.
The Pershing County boys basketball team achieved an important goal this season. They made it to the NIAA playoffs. Last Thursday, the Mustangs traveled to Incline High School and played rival school, Battle Mountain in the first round of the Northern 2A Regional Championships The Mustang/Longhorn rivalry has been wild this year. On Jan. 21, the Mustangs lost to the Longhorns on the road by 20 points (61-41). On Feb. 9, the Mustangs hosted and came out on top (62-42).
After picking up a 63-43 win over Pershing County in the opening day of the Northern 2A Regional championships at Incline High School, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team had its season come to an end on Friday night with a 63-46 loss to West Wendover. The Longhorns finished the season at 12-12, while West Wendover went on to win the Northern 2A title over Incline. Battle Mountain will graduate six seniors.
Pink Tuna out of Idaho won the 2023 Don Peters Memorial Tournament at Spare Time Bowl. The Winners Inn and Winnemucca Inn helped sponsoring the tournament, as 36 teams and nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 100 of them from out of town.

The Lowry High School boys basketball team avenged a pair of regular season losses to Churchill County in the opening round of the Northern 3A Regional Championships, beating the Greenwave 64-57 on Thursday night at North Valleys High School in Reno. The victory kept the state tournament hopes alive for Lowry, who had to face Northern 3A East regular season champion Fernley on Friday, with the winner moving on to the final week of the season.
For the first time since 2019 and the second since 2016, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team is headed back to the NIAA State Tournament. McDermitt held off late rally by Owyhee on Friday night at Elko High School, to beat the Braves 42-39 and punch its ticket to Reno later this week. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the 1A East Regional Championship on Saturday afternoon in Elko, but suffered a 50-40 loss to the Vandals. McDermitt is 20-6 on the season.
The reigning 3A state champion is set attempt to defend its title after picking up two wins at the Northern 3A Regional this past weekend at North Valleys High School in Reno. The Lady Bucks earned a 45-30 win over South Tahoe on Thursday and disposed of North Valleys, the Western 3A regular season champion, 74-52 in front of a raucous home crowd for the Panthers. Lowry’s bid to repeat as regional champion fell short on Saturday afternoon, with a 57-39 loss to Fernley. Lowry heads to the state tournament with a 24-4 record.
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team closed out the regular season this past week with three road games. The Longhorns won one of the three games to end the season at 7-7 in the Northern 2A and 11-11 overall.
