A little bit of snow and wind did not bother the Lowry High School softball team as it began 3A West crossover play with a 17-0 win over Sparks and a 21-1 victory over Wooster last week in Winnemucca. With the two wins, the Lady Bucks improved to 5-1 on the season.
It took longer than usual and after some tense meetings and even some name calling, the NIAA finally set its 5A, 4A and 3A football leagues for the next two school years.
With weather conditions made for December or January, the Lowry High School baseball team made its home debut last week with two games against 3A West foes. Lowry scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday, March 8, to beat Sparks 9-8 in walk-off fashion. The Buckaroos were back home on Friday and lost 22-6 to Wooster. Lowry is 2-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in Northern 3A play.
Battle Mountain High School’s Jr Vazquez was named to the Northern 2A all-league second team for his play during the season for the Lady Longhorns. Blake Stuart earned honorable mention honors for the Longhorns. The all-league selections are made by the league coaches.

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association resumes its season with the start of the spring schedule in Pahrump on Feb. 18-19. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong took home the top spot in the saddle bronc, winning both performances and was the only rider to have two successful runs.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team began its season this past weekend at the Pershing County tournament in Lovelock. The Longhorns went 0-4 on the weekend, losing twice to Sparks 7-0 and 14-4, to Quincy, Calif., (20-3) and to host Pershing County (10-6).
Lowry High School senior Lance Brinegar was named to the Northern 3A first and Northern 3A second team for his play during the season. The all-league selections are chosen by the league coaches. The Northern 3A first team included Fernley’s Jett Caudle (Most Valuable Player), Jake Cumming and Johnnie Williams, Elko’s Preston Chamberlin, Spring Creek’s Darren Bylund and Churchill County’s Brady Alves.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team took to the field for the first time this year with a preseason tournament in Lovelock. The Lady Longhorns got a handful of games in during the cold and windy weekend. Battle Mountain ravels to Silver Springs on Friday, March 17, for a doubleheader with Silver Stage beginning at 2 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday, March 18, at 10 a.m.
There are few things more exciting than starting a new Pershing County High School softball season. That’s especially true when the Mustangs host a preseason tournament. The girls went 2-2 for the weekend, beating Lowry JV and Sparks. They lost to Battle Mountain and Quincy, Calif.
It was a big weekend for the Pershing County Mustangs as they opened baseball season at the high school on Friday. Pershing County beat Battle Mountain for the first time in five years (10-6) but lost to Quincy, Calif., (3-1) and Sparks (22-8).
Some bad roads due to weather, a fatal wreck on US 95 in southern Nevada and a very late night arrival greeted the Lowry High School baseball team before throwing a first pitch in the Route 66 Tournament this past weekend in Needles, Calif.
After nearly 12 hours on the road to get to Mesquite on the Nevada/Arizona border, the Lowry High School softball team picked up three wins in four games at the Virgin Valley tournament. Saturday’s championship games was canceled, as weather hit and to allow the Lady Bucks to get back home through the snowstorm in central and northern Nevada.
Lowry High School junior Savannah Stoker was named the Northern 3A East, Northern 3A and 3A State Player of the Year for her performance during the season. Teammate Britain Backus was named the 3A all-state first team, as well to the first team in the 3A East and 3A North squad.
Members of the Battle Mountain NNA Swim Team were in Minden at the Carson Valley Swim Center from Feb. 10-13 for the 2023 Valentine’s Day Age Group Open. Nevaeh Serna qualified for short course JOs in the 11-12 division in seven events on March 10-12 in Santa Clara, Calif., and she also qualified for the Southwest age group Regionals March 30-April 2 in Folsom, Calif.
