Farm Bill supports more than agriculture

LOVELOCK - A new omnibus Farm Bill is under construction in the U.S. Congress. The last farm bill was passed in 2008, and since the legislation's lifespan covers four - five years, debate is gearing up for a new bill next year. Farm bills can be highly controversial and can impact international trade, environmental preservation, food safety and the well-being of rural communities. The very first Farm Bill, enacted under President Roosevelt (FDR) in 1933, was designed to aid struggling farmers during the Great Depression. The bill established support for prices for six basic commodity crops by paying farmers to reduce production.

'Silly Monster' -

Gracie Montes, 10 , a fifth-grader in Robert Meldrum's class at Imlay Elementary, wrote this Halloween poem. The assignment was to write a story about Halloween, Meldrum said. Montes chose to write this poem.

Have catapult, will travel - PCHS physics project an annual smash

LOVELOCK - Applying their studies in projectile motion to the world outside the classroom, the 19 Pershing County High School seniors enrolled in Valdine McLean's year-long physics course occupied Joe Yanni Field last Monday afternoon to sling pumpkins against a backdrop of appropriate music, either Halloween-related or dramatically orchestral.

Red Ribbon Week draws attention to drug abuse

LOVELOCK - Red ribbons have been spotted all over the town of Lovelock. The ribbons are to promote awareness of drug abuse, Frontier Community Coalition Director Jeff Munk said.Red Ribbon Week was started in the 1980s and is the oldest drug prevention campaign in the country, according to drugsrdumb.com.

Foundation donates to Relay for Life

RENO - The Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation awarded $114,951 to various non-profit organizations Oct. 19 at an awards ceremony held at Reno High School.

Safe Haven fundraiser a success Calendars now on sale

IMLAY - A great time was had by all at Safe Haven Rescue Zoo's recent wine and dessert tasting "Just Desserts" fundraiser at Art Source in Reno. Wildlife art, jewelry, faux furs and throws and other merchandise was for sale, with a percentage donated to Safe Haven.

Bountiful harvest

Lorin and Logan Oberman raised these Harvest Rewards cantaloupes in their backyard this year. The largest, shown here being held by Lorin, measures 10 inches tall. The other held by Logan is uniquely shaped like a football.

Halloween descends upon Lovelock -

A chilly autumn wind brushed leaves to the ground as dusk arrived last Monday, making conditions optimal for trick-or-treating. In the busiest - and spookiest - of Lovelock's neighborhoods, some treaters estimated that as many as 500 costumed youngsters came a-calling. At 410 14th St., Odie Monteith had transformed his front yard into an eerie landscape, complete with a tented passageway containing bony and bruised characters, a tombstone-filled graveyard bounded by picket fence and iron gate, carved and glowing pumpkins, sound effects and fog machine. "It gets more elaborate each year," sighed Monteith.

Getting ready for winter

LOVELOCK - Winter is coming. The first sign that winter is coming is the changing of the clocks, and if that doesn't convince you, then the cold night time temperatures should.

Extreme situations hinder Imlay's Extreme Chili Cook-Off Auxiliary will host event at least one more year

IMLAY - Imlay's Extreme Chili Cook-Off was hindered by extreme circumstances last month. The event held on Oct. 29 had only one chili cook-off contestant and no cars for its classic car show.

Relay for Life Summit -

Relay for Life of Pershing County attended the annual Relay for Life Summit held at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno Nov. 4 - 5. Lovelock was one of three events that obtained Pacesetter status among the northern Nevada teams, joining Fernley and the University of Nevada, Reno to receive recognition this year. To become a Pacesetter an event must meet or exceed goals set forth by Relay for Life that include meeting specific deadlines, increasing the number of teams involved and increasing funds raised from the previous year. Flying Saucer Trap Club to hold annual 'Turkey Shoot'

LOVELOCK - The Flying Saucer Trap Club will be holding its annual "Turkey Shoot" on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the trapshooting range located at 1550 Airport Road in Lovelock. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the shoot will start at 10 a.m.

Doggin' it on an autumn Saturday afternoon -

The Lovelock chapter of Relay for Life bit into a new fundraising year with its second-annual "Growl-o-Ween" dog show on Oct. 29. A total of 23 canines sported costumes in a parade of pooch pulchritude, raising $380 in the process. A list of categories and top-three finishers appeared in last week's Review-Miner.

NHP says cattle cause two accidents on I-80 Traffic rerouted off highway for several hours

LOVELOCK - The Nevada Highway Patrol said cattle on the highway were the cause of two accidents in the early morning hours of Nov. 10 on Interstate 80 near the TA Travel Center in Mill City.
